Are modern teenagers familiar with the Simpsons?

Just that really. I'm very curious, and lots of people on here have teenagers and might know!

My 16 yo DD knows what it is and will sometimes put it on at 6pm while we eat our tea (I know) to avoid me putting the news on! But she isn't really into it in a big way.

Yes, it's a constant feature on TV so all young people will be aware of it.

‘Young people’ watch very little TV. If they are watching The Simpsons it will be on a streaming service like Disney+, or from snippets used in memes on social media.

Really?! Mine are rarely away from their screens. Most teenagers I know are glued to theirs

Screens, yes. Streaming services, YouTube, TikTok: absolutely.

Live TV, not so much.

Pinkandgreentrousers · 06/04/2023 09:22

Yes

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 06/04/2023 09:46

D(16) used to watch it. She liked Lisa and Maggie. But she also grew up on a decent diet of Cartoon Network. Adventure Time and The Amazing World of Gumball. I loved Gumball.

rbe78 · 06/04/2023 09:48

Yes, my DSC, 14 and 16 love it. It's on Disney+, so they've watched it all.

Namechange828492 · 06/04/2023 09:57

I learned so much about American pop culture from the Simpsons, and even now I become aware of things that i realised i first heard about in the simpsons, e.g. I recently found out who Mary Lou Retton was haha

ItWasntMyFault · 06/04/2023 10:57

My 19 yr old ds loves it - he's watched it for years.

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/04/2023 16:39

Dts are 11 and love it. It's on all the time.

LER83 · 06/04/2023 17:04

My 12 & 10 year love it. They prefer the newer seasons to the ones I watched growing up.

whatalovelydayontheintergoodlord · 06/04/2023 17:07

Both mine like it. All but the most recent seasons are on Disney + so they watch it all the time.

I imagine many won't have though as it isn't current.

KilljoysMakeSomeNoise · 06/04/2023 17:10

Yes, mine watch it occasionally. We used to have it on tv a lot more, but don't often watch tv now. 15 yo and 18yo will sometimes put it on on whatever streaming thing it's on now.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 06/04/2023 18:02

My 15 Yr old dd watched pretty much every episode a couple of years ago. Unlike me, who's never watched one all the way through.

reelcat · 06/04/2023 18:20

Yes!

RandomExpletive · 06/04/2023 18:22

That brought back some memories! Adventure Time and Gumball on a neverending loop!

I adored them! There was a political underlay of gumball I loved. The best example of that, was an episode where Richard says you have to do well at school, to get a good job, to be able to buy stuff you don’t need. Which are made /sold by people who are employed so they can buy things they don’t need.

you don’t get economic commentary from other cartoons do you.

duvetcovereddissident · 08/04/2023 08:07

yes, they know it better than I do

Saisong · 08/04/2023 08:17

Yes, we've watched it as a family for years because it seems to be on at teatime endlessly, so Friday night when we do takeaway and eat in front of TV it is our regular watch.

13yo also loves Futurama at the moment, and records all the episodes he can. It used to be Gumball. If not watching that it is Top Gear, Gadget Show, Taskmaster or Robot Wars.

heidbuttsupper · 08/04/2023 08:34

My 16 year old niece loves it. Mainly due to me. Its my favourite show!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/04/2023 09:12

DiscoBeat · 06/04/2023 08:19

Absolutely! DS15 and DS12 still love it, know most of the episodes and now enjoy picking out the risqué stuff and the political references that the never saw before.

Mine are 11 and 14, and they do the same.

ScentOfAMemory · 08/04/2023 09:13

I'd say a minority. The ones who are into retro animation etc.
But, as others said, they tend to watch stuff on streaming sites.

ScentOfAMemory · 08/04/2023 09:15

(one of our coursebooks at school has been republished due to "outdated teenage references" I have the old copy and there's a few articles about The Simpsons. They aren't in the new editions)

HiImTheProblemItsMe · 08/04/2023 09:35

I'm a secondary teacher - I'd agree they'd recognise it but probably wouldn't know character names or plot lines unless they have a particular interest in it. There is a tik tok thing (possibly other websites too) about The Simpsons predicting the future so many will have seen short clips from that.
