Tranexamic acid and ibuprofen - can they be taken together?

Hi - I am trying to find out if tranexamic acid can be taken alongside ibuprofen and am finding conflicting advice online. I will call the chemist when they open, but in the meantime am wondering if anyone has any experience? It’s for my 17 year old dd.

Thanks a lot.

Yes, it's fine.

I take both together every month.

Yes my DD had a prescription for tranexamic acid and naproxen (nsaid like ibuprofen) together.

SallySailor · 06/04/2023 07:17

But do make sure to take nsaids with food!

SpecialControlGroup · 06/04/2023 07:19

They can (I take tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid every month, along with co codamol)

tranexamic acid and NSAIDs are both terribly hard on your stomach though so I have also been prescribed omeprazole

Italiancitizenship · 06/04/2023 09:07

Thanks a lot all 😊.

@SallySailor how does your dd find naproxen? The GP said that would be the next step for my daughter. Her periods are awful - she might normally miss two days of school because of them but last time it was four days (luckily this one has started in the holidays).

@SpecialControlGroup my dd has also been prescribed omeprazole - hasn’t taken it yet however so this will be the first month

I feel sorry for a home suffering like this, it’s really debilitating.

@Italiancitizenship it's years ago, so can't really remember, but from the age of 13 she went through ibuprofen/mefanamic acid (also worth a try if she hasn't already)/naproxen and none were brilliant. What worked best for her was going on the pill.

I have naproxen prescribed myself for similar issues and don't like it much tbh. It makes me very tired after about three days. It is so individual though, so probably a case of trying different options to find the best fit. Keep going back if her pain isn't helped. W regards to Naproxen and ibuprofen, it's worth remembering they work best if started a day or two before a period is expected, as they reduce production of prostaglandins that cause the cramps (apologies if you're already well versed in this). This is obvs tricky to do if not regular. I'm not, which means it takes a couple of days for me to get full effect of the Naproxen. I'm not sure if there is a difference between Naproxen and Ibuprofen in this regard.

❤️ To your dd. It's horrible suffering like that.

Thank you for your message @SallySailor - two days later and this period is the first one that my dd has kind of been able to manage - she took the tranexamic acid early enough and the ibuprofen has been helping.

My dd has been on the pill but was discouraged by the side effects (constant low level bleeding).

Thanks for the information that you have passed on about starting painkillers early and for your kind words.

@Italiancitizenship which pill was it?
If it was the mini pill then they can cause irregular bleeding
The combined pill is more likely to control her periods
