24 hour supermarkets in Scotland

Dh and Dd are off to Scotland this weekend for a big event for dd’s sport.

They are staying close to an Asda that claims to be 24 hours.

In England a “24 hour supermarket” is actually open from 8am on a Monday until 10pm on a Saturday and the 10am - 4pm on a Sunday.

Is that also true in Scotland or does “24 hours” actually mean 24/7?

Or is it one of those “it depends” situations?

You can't buy booze in them after 10pm but the Tesco I used in Edinburgh was genuinely 24hrs.

'24hr' means open, 24 hours, around the clock.

Thanks. They won’t be buying booze (although Dd at an event would drive anyone to drink!) so looking hopeful….

It means 24 hours 7 days a week although the one near me was also right next to a nights club and they had issues on a Friday and Saturday night so they did close for a few hours over exit time from the club on those nights. The clubs gone now though. Think the hours are back to proper 24 hours

Some of them shut for a couple of hours Friday and Saturday... between like 2 and 5am, because they get drunk clubbers on their way home.

Most that say 24 hours are open 24 hours, however on a bank holiday weekend I’d double check. The one nearest us (we’re near the border) often closes on the Saturday night and opens later on the Sunday on BH’s.

I was so surprised to discover this on a trip to England a couple of years ago that the supermarkets shut in Sunday morning. If you’re going anywhere near Glasgow the 24h supermarkets stay opened. We don’t have this Sunday closing rule.

Why do English supermarkets shut at the weekend? Is that not when most people want to do their shopping?

Saturdays are fine, it’s just Sundays that are the problem.
Sunday trading laws, no idea why it’s still a thing!

I didn’t realise it wasn’t a thing in Scotland.
why is it still a thing in England? So many times I’ve needed to grab a few bits on a Sunday, and remember I have to wait until 12 oclock 🙄

Gingerkittykat · 06/04/2023 01:05

There are not many 24 hour supermarkets left and they all are Asda near me and the Tescos close 11pm. Some only open 24 hours at the weekends now too.

HirplesWithHaggis · 06/04/2023 01:08

Pretty sure my nearest Asda (small town) is a genuine 24/7, except maybe at New Year.

Most supermarkets in England open at 10 or 11 am on Sunday and many actually allow you to start shopping 30 mins before then.

But if a supermarket closes at night, its not a 24 hour supermarket, therefore if its a 24 hour supermarket its open 24/7 or likely 24/6 at least.

In England I found that the supermarkets that were 24 hour were more like 'we'll let you in while we restock but you'll need to climb over pallets, all the fresh counters are closed and you can only pay by self service so we're not really properly open' so only useful if you're desperate anyway.

Thanks All. This is really useful. Good point about it being Easter Sunday - I think dh will have to check when he gets there.

It is slightly fascinating to me (as someone who lives in England) that there isn’t the Sunday trading hours issue with supermarkets in Scotland. What makes it even more confusing / irritating in England is that some shops (up to a certain size) can open for more than the 6 hours. So you can buy milk (or whatever) at 8am on a Sunday - you just have to find a suitably small shop to do so.
