If you have been in debt, but need to rent a place…

What do you put on your application? And is there anyway to show that you do have enough money on your bank statement to afford the rent, and you can pay upfront. I have a disability, which makes things a lot more difficult to begin with. I lost a lot of my very limited vision during the pandemic, had no help, and was not able to read any of my print mail.

I still have some things that need to be paid, I wish I could do everything over the phone rather than doing things online. It’s just a lot easier.

I was under the impression that landlords and estate agents can't see your full credit report and only have access to publicly available records such as bankruptcy CCJs and IVA's. Not sure if that's still the case. They will do affordability checks to see if you can afford the rent. Your monthly income usually has to be around 2.5 times the monthly rent. There are also options to pay more rent up front or get a guarantor if you fail the credit checks.

The bills I had trouble with were the electric, the water, and the council tax. I was a full-time student, so should not have even had to pay the council tax. That is one of the bills still needs to be paid, and I don’t know if it would be too late to show proof that I was at university.

Long as no CCJs, IVAs etc you'll be fine. :)

Do you have arrangements for all the bills now? Particularly the council tax?

Stone, for the council tax, can I still submit proof that I was a student last year? I’m not sure how I would do that or who I would even need to contact.

I would assume so as I did it to prove my son was a student. I just wouldn't leave that unresolved. They will come after you for it and it will affect your ability to rent.
