In your opinion?

Lamps definitely, I hate when you stay in a holiday cottage and it's just the main very bight light bulb in the evening. Also things like rugs, cushions, table clothes, vase of flowers, photo's, books, general niknaks, toys, signs of life basically but not too many or it feels like a cluttered mess. It should be clean but not spartan.

Funny fridge magnets, photographs, throws, cushions, books, mess(😉)

Rugs, lamps, photos. A few toys and personal items laying about.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 05/04/2023 22:48

A cat.
Migs which are chipped, aren't part of a matching set and some of them tell a story.
Tidy but not pristine like a show home
A load of washing waiting to be put away dumped on an armchair 😂
Big teapot always on the go
Shoes in the hallway
💜

The people in it!

Youngatheart00 · 05/04/2023 22:59

Cats and books and art ☺️

God I was waiting for the books comment. I hope it was being said as a piss take. Otherwise the whole thread always gets derailed and turned into a raging debate about the snobbery of book displayers versus the modernity of kindle readers

It's not snobby to like books

Shoes in the hall. A cardigan or jacket on the back of a kitchen chair. Lots of bits and bobs of family life in the fruit bowl. Framed photos, house plants, throws on the sofa and a cat. Always a cat.

Oh, I didn't know you'd been to my house? 🥰

Coxspurplepippin · 05/04/2023 23:14

The cats and DH (in no particular order...), The books, the woodburner, flowers, pictures on the walls that mean a lot to us. The chairs and tables where we sit and chat, the handmade quilts and blankets, the furniture that's been with us for years, the time we spend cooking together in the kitchen, listening to the radio. Everything familiar, loved, lived in and cherished.

Magnu · 05/04/2023 23:34

Warmth! Of all kinds. And no overhead lights in the evening Grin

MrsHughesPinny · 06/04/2023 00:01

Art, books, light.

Thurgie · 06/04/2023 01:02

Books. I discounted my brother-in-law as a potential guardian for my children because he had no books in the house.

Can I just say .. the house is TINY.. but the view is huge and happiness inducing ..

I just love this. Goals...

sunshineandshowers40 · 06/04/2023 01:18

Family.
A cat (even a moody one 🤣)

Lamps rather than the big light, cosy small rooms rather than open plan minimalism, big deep bed with thick clean bedding and pillows, rooms that show evidence of being lived in not a show house, good aroma of food cooking or coffee. I particularly love that moment when it’s raining and grey outside and you just step inside your front door to warmth, cosy lighting, and family busy and chatty in the kitchen. Love it!

Yes! I think this says it all.

mathanxiety · 06/04/2023 01:35

Books
Well used teapot
Smell of freshly baked yeast bread
Smell of fresh coffee

mathanxiety · 06/04/2023 01:38

Sorry to lower the tone of the thread, @Era

Ponderingtosk · 06/04/2023 01:48

For me it’s blankets to snuggle under on the sofa, we did this long before the energy crisis, I had a friend who used to invite you in, throw you a blanket to snuggle under and disappear to make tea and find biscuits (her house was freezing though).

BritInAus · 06/04/2023 03:20

As per PP, things/art/ornaments etc that aren't just picked out from IKEA/other generic shops. Things you've bought on holiday / someone has made / etc. Not all matchy matchy and like a show home. Indoor plants, colour, a sense of personality. Not like it's been dressed for sale in safe, generic colours.

LadyJ2023 · 06/04/2023 03:36

Hubby,children,cats,dog and my bed haha

teaandtoastplease · 06/04/2023 03:46

A lit fire, full bookshelves, blankets and somewhere comfy to curl up and read

CeriB82 · 06/04/2023 07:28

Family
comfy sofa
your choice of sof furnishings and paint colour- not what the latest boring trend is on Instagram or what that Hinch woman has on her walls

Piscesmumma1978 · 06/04/2023 07:44

We had a new build and it wasn't a home. I tried with paint and photos etc but it never really had that feel.

We moved to an older house that had been a family home. Totally different and feels like home.

People viewed our new build and said it had a lovely family feel but I never felt it!
