Hey I've recently applied for a passport after phoning them to say i can't get either parents birth certificates no matter what I try. They said this was fine just send in the application. Now they are telling me they can't move forward because they don't have my mother birth certificate. Has anyone been through this and actually got a passport?!

Please help I'm super desperate.

What is the issue with obtaining your mother's birth certificate? I assume you've been through the GRO?

NoodleNuts · 05/04/2023 13:15

Are you and your mother from England/Wales? If so, you should be able to order a copy of her birth certificate for £11.00.

I can't get my mother's birth certificate as I don't know many details and we werent in contact for nearly 10 years. I've asked her for a copy but shes refused and won't give me any details to get it myself plus I've tried to get it with what little information I have with no luck

You only need to know what name she was born with, the quarter/year and area?

Mez13 · 05/04/2023 13:26

I know but still no luck.

It will have your mothers details on your birth certificate. Use that to order a copy of hers.

My mum died when I was 10 but I managed to get her birth certificate this way.

A person's birth certificate only gives the mother's full name and maiden name (if any) and any previous surnames.

It doesn't give date or place of the mother's birth.

The General Register Office search demands that you give a place of birth or its search doesn't work, and it only searches one year either side of the birth year you put in.

OP, do you know anyone who has access to Ancestry or similar sites with birth records? Could you search on there using your mother's full birth name and a year of birth plus or minus 5, 10 or 15 years, if you have some idea of her age? Although how easy that would be depends on how common or uncommon the names are.

But you might find enough details to then request a certificate from the GRO.

Your mother sounds nice!

I had a lot of trouble even though I sent my mother’s certificate along with mine. I’d say your best bet is to call them and explain your problem and see if they can find a way around it for you.

Liquorish · 05/04/2023 14:12

I meant call the passport office again and explain you were told it was fine to send the application without the certificate and you still have no means of getting it.

LIZS · 05/04/2023 14:12

Freebmd will give a district of birth and maiden name of mother.

NoodleNuts · 05/04/2023 14:29

I have a subscription to Ancestry, If you do want me to search to see what I can find, send me an PM with the info you have.

Mez13 · 06/04/2023 00:28

I've tried all that's been suggested. I literally just don't know what to do anymore was hoping someone had been through similar and could maybe give me hope I guess.

Has your mother been married at any point?

PamelaShipman80 · 06/04/2023 01:03

Yes! In the end I had to go to the passport office for an interview. I think I just pushed that I could not get a copy of this in the end. It was so so stressful trying to get that passport when I was NC with parents!
