Hi all
you were so helpful before, I'm afraid I'm back.

I need to clarify step free (or escalator free) access from Canary Wharf to Hampstead on the Northern Line. I think there's a couple of options for that journey but I'm getting confused as it says things like "step free only at street level" for changing at London Bridge for example.

does anyone know for sure how to get to the DLR or Jubilee platform at Canary Wharf and then how to change at Bank or London Bridge? Thank you.

I think lift access to the Jubilee Line at CW is fine. At London Bridge, I think you'd have to come up in the lift from the Jubilee Line and then touch out the barriers and touch in again to the Northern Line and then get a lift down there. I think the only connections between the two lines are via stairs otherwise. You'd probably find that a nice TFL person will open the barriers for you on both sides though so it doesn't cost you double. I'd avoid Bank personally.

As calypso said ⬆️. However, as the Northern line has two north bound branches, take the branch going to Edgware

ToBeOrNotToBee · 04/04/2023 23:53

Change at bank. The recent reno works has made it very easy to change stepfree.

GingerAle1 · 05/04/2023 00:01

Thanks everyone

that makes sense re Jubilee Line.

Re changing at Bank, when you put the journey into TFL and say "step free access" it does look okay but when you look at descriptions, it doesn't. I tweeted to them and they just gave me a link to the pdf of step free stations.

they also suggested the Elizabeth Line, saying it's all step free, but it doesn't come up as an option on Journey Planner. But if it's all step free, then I could get the Elizabeth Line to Tottenham Court Road?

In theory, the Elizabeth line should be an option and it is the route that journey planner gives me but I'm not sure what the interchange at TCR is like. I would be surprised if there were lifts to the Northern Line there but I could be wrong. The problem with some of those central London stations is they've had to cram the Elizabeth line and sometimes there's a bit of a walk or an awkward change.

MyAnacondaMight · 05/04/2023 00:13

Elizabeth line is step free, including the change to the northern line at TCR. I would go that way.

London Bridge you’d have to exit and re-enter, as above poster has said. At bank there are lifts up from the DLR, and new lifts down to the northern line, but I don’t know how they connect. It used to be that the DLR lifts required staff assistance, so it wasn’t the easiest option.

TCR is a dream for step free sine the Elizabeth line opened. You can easily get from Elizabeth to Northern, take that route.

Just looked further into it and it doesn't work as it only goes to Stratford from CW. Looks like CW is two separate stations as well, so we will have to pick one!

The Elizabeth line does go from CW to TCR, not Stratford (that's via the Jubilee). There are two separate CW stations for Elizabeth and Jubilee, perhaps around 5 minutes walk and step free to both.

Have you tried the Citymapper app? It's great and free, everyone I know uses it! You can select step free as an option and it shows you possible routes. It also factors in line closures etc for the upcoming week.

Thank you! I have too many apps on my phone. I just need to go to London this week and after that, hopefully not for a very long while.

so to access the Elizabeth Line, do we go to the DLR station at Canary Wharf? DC will be excited to use a "new" line.

No, you go to the Elizabeth line station to get the Elizabeth line. There are 3 “Canary Wharf” stations - one for jubilee, one for DLR and one for crossrail/Elizabeth line (two names for the same line). You want the station on the water that looks like a giant metal tube, with purple signage. Or just ask someone: locals far outweigh tourists around Canary Wharf, so plenty of people to direct you.

Attached a map showing the different stations. Or this might help: https://canarywharf.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/canary-wharf-map-19-may-22.pdf

MyAnaconda thank you, that's really helpful. Now I'm wondering what the roof garden is like!
MN is so much better than a travel site, thank you everyone.

Thanks so much everyone
it went smoothly and we're at our friends' in Hampstead. It is sooooo nice here and tomorrow will be sunny! I think some of After Life is filmed here?

I certainly couldn't have figured it out easily, there were lots of staff around but it was very busy. Straightfoward bus to Eustone for train home on Sat so that's easy.
