How good would you expect to need to be for a £70k job?

At interview. I interview for much lower level jobs and sometimes successful candidates don't do that well, but we see something or they're the best we can get for the money

I've just interviewed for a public sector job with a salary of £70k. I've done a very similar job in another part of the public sector but not in this organisation.

I did 'OK'. There was a series of 121 "chats" with board members which were friendly and flowed easily, but I doubt that they gained anything inciteful from them.

There was a practical exercise sent in advance, which I think did very well at.

There was a presentation to prepare and deliver on the day. I think my content was good I Googled it, that's using initiative, right? but the presentation was far from polished.

Then there was a big panel interview. Some difficult questions, mostly tell us about when...I had some really good examples but at least 2 answers were a bit waffly and one I had practically nothing to offer, although I did try to fit my experience to the question.

So, at this level, is 100% necessary or does mostly pretty good have a chance?

@mackthepony the OP asked how good you have to be for £70k. I answered in relation to academia where £70k is a pretty high salary and you have to be near the top of your field. Even to get an entry level job you have to be pretty darn good.

Maybe other jobs or professions don’t have such high standards - or such shit pay as university lecturers!

I'm on a bit more than this and I was rolling my eyes on the nonsense at the start of the thread. I'm on the money I'm on because I can be trusted to come up with the goods. I create my own work, I don't wait for delegation. Oh, and I Google work stuff all the time 😀😀. Anyone who says they don't is full of shit. Everyone seeks inspiration from old Dr google. It doesn't mean I don't know my job. I think some of the folk talking about all the courses you would need to do are still in secondary because that is simply not the way the professional world works

Yes, I knew the subject but Google gave me some headlines to talk about and made sure I didn't miss something on the day. I could talk about the headings once I'd had the prompt. I'm not a great public speaker, especially when nervous in an interview situation, but I was knowledgeable

I got a job recently at higher pay than this. I used ChatGP as part of my prep, to identify questions that they may ask and to distill potential points I'd like to make.

It is daft not to use tools like google to prep for interviews and poor advice to poo poo the idea.

I strongly advocate to the people in my teams (but particularly women) that you can only get a job if you apply. All too often we hold back and then watch someone less able be successful for a job we didn't apply for. I wont do that any more. It's scary, but even if you don't get a role the application and prep for a job that's a big stretch is good experience anyway.

Depends.

In my industry shit hot.

In my partners industry... half decent.

Having seen the led by donkeys fake South Korean business interviews with the MPs, I would say you don't have to be great.

I have a zoom interview in the next few days for a role with much less salary, the question is, should I have the champagne and glasses in the background? Clearly I don't have to brush my hair, smarten up or actually know anything about the company.

Congratulations on the job.Wine
