Roast gammon dinner.., should I do stuffing?

I've never had gammon as a roast dinner but it's a request from a visitor.

I assume it's just a normal roast but with gammon?! Do you have yorkshires? Stuffing? What do you make gravy with (meat juices being my usual thing)

Please give me your favourite sides Smile

I'd still do all the trimmings! As well as bread sauce and cauliflower cheese as I think it goes well! Normal gravy.

Stressyfab · 04/04/2023 15:23

Def do stuffing!! 😍

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/04/2023 15:24

I am old and instantly thought of pineapple slices. Grin That may be more something people used to have with gammon steaks, though.

I have a memory that parsley sauce might be traditional with roast gammon. However, we never have it as the saddos I live with don't like gammon (I know, I know), so I can't really advise with any authority.

Cauli/broccoli cheese.
I still do toasties, veg, gravy, stuffing and Yorkies but I do that whatever the meat.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 04/04/2023 15:27

I do make my usual sage and onion but add in grated apple. I serve it as balls. Are you glazing your joint with anything before roasting?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/04/2023 15:29

I nearly always make parsley sauce and mashed potatoes - they always go down well - no proper (made in the roasting tin) gravy - that’s for other roasts.

ODFOx · 04/04/2023 15:29

For a Sunday Roast:
Gammon
Roasted and mashed potatoes
Cumberland sauce
Spiced red cabbage
Mixed roasted root veg (usually carrots, parsnips, beetroot)
Cauliflower cheese
Green beans
Broccoli
Yorkshire puddings only if exFiL visiting.

I add the extra greens because otherwise it's a bit too sweet for me, but apparently most folk like gammon and sweet things.

AllIeveknewonlyou · 04/04/2023 15:30

When I ate meat we would have gammon with parsley sauce, it was good.

Anything goes really if you fancy stuffing and yorkies

ODFOx · 04/04/2023 15:31

For a less formal meal:
Mashed potatoes and either parsley sauce, Cumberland sauce, red cabbage or cauliflower cheese.

Mrsjayy · 04/04/2023 15:32

I wouldn't do stuffing but I have cauliflower cheese with mine and no gravy everything else though.

ODFOx · 04/04/2023 15:33

I've never done stuffing with gammon but I've been known to o eat stuffing on its own so whyever not!!

lipstickwoman · 04/04/2023 15:34

I agree with cauli cheese and red cabbage but I know he won't eat it.

I'd usually do cheesy mash too but the request was 'let's have a roast dinner, but can we have gammon'.

My roast dinners don't usually mean gammon!

Stuffing goes with chicken or turkey for me, Gammon would be:

Boiled potatoes
Cabbage
Carrots
Peas or green beans
Mashed swede
Parsley sauce

Or

Roast potatoes
Cauliflower & Brocolli cheese
Gravy

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 04/04/2023 15:39

Roast gammon, onion sauce, roast potatoes and veg. Can’t believe people would have gravy and stuffing with gammon. Doesn’t it completely clash taste wise?

TomatoSandwiches · 04/04/2023 15:43

Gravy is for the roasties! 😋

Mrsjayy · 04/04/2023 15:44

Oo I have onion sauce with pork but gammon sounds a game changer!

Laiste · 04/04/2023 15:49

I'd be quite thrown by gammon as the meat in a roast.

I use the meat juices to do gravy and it wouldn't be quite right. Bit salty surely?

But if i was going to do it i'd do the stuffing yes, and yorkshires otherwise it's not a roast.

elm26 · 04/04/2023 15:50

I do all the trimmings with every roast so I'd say yes 😂

lipstickwoman · 04/04/2023 15:52

I'm equally thrown by gammon in a roast dinner.... can't you tell?

So gammon
Roasties
Mash
Carrots
Peas
Sprouts
Stuffing
Gravy.

How's that sound?

Bigtom · 04/04/2023 15:57

I regularly do roast gammon. I do it with:

Roast potatoes
Cauliflower cheese
One other veg (carrots or broccoli)
Gravy

No stuffing (chicken or turkey only) or Yorkshire puddings (beef only).

AllIeveknewonlyou · 04/04/2023 16:00

That sounds fine.

Laiste · 04/04/2023 16:00

It sounds good OP.

(but i'd be cooking it with a Hmm face)

😂

AliceTheeCamel · 04/04/2023 16:01

I do gravy using chicken gravy granules to go with roast gammon (I don't like parsley sauce). Fairly sweet sides like roast carrots/parsnips/sweet potatoes and also red cabbage work well. Plus a green veg like broccoli or sprouts.

I wouldn't do stuffing personally.

ExtremelyDetermined · 04/04/2023 16:01

It's the only roast that cauliflower cheese goes well with IMO as there's no gravy, but if he won't eat it I'd leave it out and just do roasties and veg and serve with mustard or maybe bread sauce.

LlynTegid · 04/04/2023 16:02

I would not do stuffing. Vegetables and gravy.
