Hit by a bike… worried!

My parents, 50s, are away enjoying a lovely city break at the moment. My mum was hit by one of those e-bikes which came out of nowhere around lunchtime today. She has awful massive red/purple bruising by the rib area on both sides but nowhere else. No other injuries, mercifully! Obviously very shaken up and shocked but got back up pretty much straight away, didn’t call 999 nor go to hospital or get checked over. She has reassured us all that she hasn’t felt dizzy or lightheaded, and has been well enough to have some drinks, sit and have dinner in a restaurant and wander round the city all evening. Now back safely at the hotel.

I do have health anxiety (which I am managing) but I am worried she will have caused herself some real damage somehow or internal bleeding? I’ve even been worried she won’t wake up in the morning because of this injury. Am I being a numpty? Please be kind!!

As kindly as I can put this? You’re not managing your health anxiety. She didn’t need the hospital. This is your anxiety.

I have suffered with anxiety and know the spiral effect only too well. Use your coping strategies. Speak to your GP if you need some more!!

The best way to judge if she's ok is whether she was able to do normal activities afterwards without too much discomfort. Judging by the fact that she was able to carry on the rest of the day I think you can conclude that nothing too sinister is likely to have occurred. That being said, if she wants to take it easy for a few days I wouldn't worry about that either - falling over even just from tripping over my own feet can shake me up a bit, totally normal!

You can help. What are your coping strategies? Exercise? Distraction? Mindfulness? What treatment are you having?

I take duloxetine to manage my health anxiety. Life changing for me.
