Has anyone's views on holidays totally changed as they got older?

I used to charge about ticking off sights and have definitely, preciously, twattishly said that I could never do a beach holiday.

Now I will do one or two sights in the morning, by the easiest way possible, thoroughly enjoy a big open top bus, and spend my afternoon reading.

Funnily enough my mum has gone the other way!

Good for you. And what a brilliant user name!

I feel a bit like that. Like the idea of the Camino. But keep bottling out. Maybe I'll do it on a tour bus 🚍

Why not just do Sarria to Santiago and see how you find it? It only takes 5 days or so - then get a bus to Vigo and visit the Cies Isles. Stunningly beautiful.

Id just like a holiday where we didnt have to take our accommodation with us. Id like to turn up to beds, towels and an ensuite and not have to put a tent up. I've really enjoyed our camping trips which we started before children, and just carried on. But i feel like im ready for a change. We also move around a lot on holiday camping at a couple of sites and i think id like to stay put now.

I can't be arsed with them now. The four of us stuck in a smaller, shittier version of home for a week, the constant asking for money for crap, traipsing about in the heat, the unending discussions about sunscreen.

Then you get home knackered, do 11 loads of washing, and go back to work the next day, shattered and skint.

Would honestly rather be at work.

This made me chuckle. I felt like that every holiday until we got a villa and what a difference. So relaxing!

Yes OP....l am the same as you....would have gone anywhere at all but now l hqve to reqlly think about it - blaming covid for that. Plus a UK holiday is sooo much easier just load up the car and go on my own schedule

All self catering accommodation in the U.K. now is so overpriced. Much if it quite utilitarian. You then have to go to the supermarket and cook most meals. There is the tidying at the end to make sure you get your deposit back. The weather is usually shite. I used to enjoy it but I don’t anymore.
I’ve also been traumatised by a couple of really awful experiences with owners who tried to rip me off.

@LuckySantangelo35

I have a mild social anxiety disorder which has only developed in the last few years. This has manifested in paruresis amongst other symptoms. It's not overwhelming by any means but I'm just more comfortable in my own home.

QuintanaRoo · 04/04/2023 12:28

Honestly don’t think I’ll ever go abroad again. Anxiety has made it really difficult for me. I bought a caravan and to be honest I find even that hard. Am meant to be going 50 miles up the road at the weekend and am dreading it.

@twoglassesplease I discovered cruises when DC were late teens and it was a revelation. I would hate communal tables but I never saw anything other than tables for 2,4 or 6. I deliberately chose an informal cruise though, can't abide havinga dress code.

Yes, I actually go on them now! I've been single for about 20 years and there are so many places I wanted to visit but didn't, because I was worried about going on my own. Last year, I just thought, why the hell shouldn't I? So I did, and now I'm working my way through my wish list 🙂

That is so lovely and positive. I hope you love all the places on your list.

@twoglassesplease I know they tend to be a bit pricier, but Saga holidays have private car transfer built into the price. It's so nice having it all organised. We know someone who lives on the IOW and they go away a lot (usually cruises) so their holidays start and finish with anxiety. Not for me!
