Refresher lessons - haven’t driven since passed

I passed my driving test ten year ago, but I barely drove after that. I found it absolutely terrifying, and I don’t know how I passed my test because I felt like I hadn’t fully absorbed everything. I had no real opportunity to use my new skill during the week as I was never permitted to use the car park at work. I had two very young children and it wa s a huge responsibility, and I panicked. So it just floundered and I never ever drove again.

i do have heavy fears about driving, but my new job and new way of life would be much easier with a car. The gear changes and bite etc scares the shit out of me and I feel an automatic might be an option, so I’ve booked a lesson.

However I remember very little about driving :( is there anything I can study before hand to help?

You could revise the theory beforehand regarding right of way, roundabouts, etc. so that you concentrate more on the driving I guess.

I was in a similar position to you, got my license and shortly after got pregnant and nauseous so I didn’t drive for 4 years. I booked refresher lessons and the instructor was much better than my previous one, I only took 3 lessons with him and by the end I was finally confident on what I was doing and how to remedy any possible stalling, etc. which I would have panicked about before then.

I am so happy I took the refreshers and that I can now drive, it has made more of a difference than I would have thought, it’s made my life a lot easier.

Good luck and don’t give up!! 🚘🚘

Thank you
my instructor was a relative (that was his job) but I honest think this was one of the factors that didn’t help, and I’m older now and much more willing to learn-back them I just didn’t have the best of attitudes to learning!

My husband was in the same boat. Hadn't driven in nearly 20 years. He had 2 hours of refresher lessons in an automatic car to go over the basics, and then bought an automatic, he picked it up again very quick and he was not confident atall. Definately helps getting an automatic because you haven't got to worry about gears, stalling, biting point etc
