How do I turn up really long trousers?

Being short I’m used to turning trousers up, so I just normally fold them inwards to the desired length and hand sew them.

but I’ve just bought some trousers which are at least six inches too long so no way can I have a turn up that long even if it’s inside. So I’ve ordered some pinking shears.

now it’s only cotton pjs so I’m not too bothered what they look like, they can have a pinking shear finish for all I care. But will they fray? Do I need to pinking shear them and then hem? Or can I get away without sewing! 😀

You could pinking shear and then do a double fold hem with the iron on tape??

I dont understand why you cant just cut off the excess and then just fold them up twice and hand sew as youve done before?

Yes, I could fold after cutting and do what I’ve done before. Guess I’m just being lazy and hoping to avoid sewing, not sure how good pinking shears are for preventing fraying.

If you have a sewing machine zig zagging the edges would be better than pinking shears? I think they will still fray a bit if you just pink.

If they are 6 inches too long, cut 5 inches off and then turn up what is left. If you wan't want to sew use iron on hem tape. I use uit all the time nad it whilst it isn;t as permanent as sewing I find it usually lasts at least 6 months before you ahve to redo it.

I have a sewing machine which I bought because I have short legs. I'm sick of trousers not fitting. I cut off the excess fabric. Most of the time, I double fold them and sew a straight stitch. Sometimes, I do a zigzag stitch along the hem, then single fold and do a straight stitch. I don't remember ever doing one of those fancy stitches that only pinches a little through the front. A straight one looks fine most of the time, in either a similar colour or a contrasting colour to the fabric.

But they will fray unless you treat the hem properly. It's not worth it to be lazy, unless you are throwing the trousers away after a few wash. Get a sewing machine if you can afford it. It makes it very easy to do trousers.

I would cut them 2 cm longer than the length you need with normal scissors.
Turn up 1cm press. Then turn up another cm. Press. Then hand sew. You won't need to worry about the hem fraying as it will be inside the hem. Easy.

If you don't want to sew them, maybe use the iron on hem stuff after cutting?

QuintanaRoo · 03/04/2023 15:19

Thanks, I’ll cut and turn and the hand sew them.
