DD (nearly 6) is a very capable reader but increasingly difficult to find fiction for, partly because she can't cope with any level of tension/ mild peril. This makes it hard to find books of the right level which she enjoys. She loves Roald Dahl, but has already read all the ones which are not too terrifying (i.e. not The Witches). She flatly refuses anything "scary", but also anything cutesy or involving fairies etc. I don't stop her reading anything which interests her and is age-appropiate (sample from today's library visit: "Atoms and molecules", "Astrophysics made easy" and "Murderous Maths", all chosen by her) but I would love to find some more fiction she actually likes. Weirdly, she's fine with Horrible Histories: gruesome doesn't seem to bother her. She also loves Usborne Eyewitness books.
Can anyone help with recommendations for fiction books which are not scary, not fairy-based, not too easy (school say her reading age is 11/12, although I don't know how meaningful that is) and might appeal to a girl who loves science/ nature/ maths?
