Headstone for unmarked grave?

My mum had a baby that was still born 55 ish years ago. She's now found the unmarked grave. She wants to get a headstone but also wants to move the baby once she has passed away so they can be together. No clue how to go about any of this. Any advice?

She would need to contact whoever manages the cemetery. In many areas this is the local council. There will be a burials department, or graveyards department.

Erecting a headstone is easy. Applying to move a body is not so easy.

Still born babies were sometimes buried in groups, rather than individually, so that would need to be ascertained first. If it was a group burial then moving the remains would be impossible . A group burial would also make any headstone difficult. What sort of place is the grave ?
How sad for your Mum.

My friend had the body of her brother exhumed and put in a family grave. It was a very long and expensive process and she had to get lots of approval from various close relatives including his estranged wife who wouldn’t agree to it at first. She would be better moving the baby now and then putting a headstone up at the new plot then later being buried herself at that plot with her child.

my friend did it with the help of a (paid for) funeral director.

you could also Google the process using your local authority, here’s the process for mine as an Example

I am so sorry for your Mum's loss.

As Knitting says, find who manages the cemetery; a headstone should be straightforward. Exhumation and re-interring may be a difficult task. Here's a link https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-an-exhumation-licence#:~:text=You%20need%20to%20apply%20for,site%20to%20a%20new%20grave

Apply for an exhumation licence

You need an exhumation licence if you are removing human remains from the ground
