Defrosting pie question

piedbeauty · 02/04/2023 16:32

Large fruit pie - dh took it out of the freezer yesterday lunchtime and it's been in the fridge ever since. He's planning on cooking it tonight. Is that ok? Or too long in the fridge?

And the pie is dated August last year - should be eaten within 6 months, so we are past that. Is that because of quality? Or will it make us ill?

Would you eat it?

(These might be really stupid questions; I have OCD around food and hygiene.)

I’d cook it and eat it, no problem .

You'll be lucky if its defrosted by now in the fridge. I find it can take days sometimes.

Quality may be affected by the extended period in the freezer but wont do you any harm.

Do you have custard or ice cream?

No problem at all . The only time I’d be unsure is if it was a meat pie.

I'd happily cook and eat it!

It will be perfectly safe to eat. I would have cooked it from frozen anyway

cherrypied · 02/04/2023 16:49

Yes it will be fine!

Assuming it was freshly frozen and not on the last day it will last several days before cooking

Pastry delicate so might get freezer burn hence the 6 months but fine to eat.

Thanks, all. The pie company says to defrost before cooking but doesn't give a length of time this should take.

It's been in the fridge, so below the temp at which bacteria grow... and it went in the freezer straight away when we bought it.

So it says it can last in the fridge for four days, so if it went in straight away then the four days start from yesterday?

(Sorry - am anxious about something else and it makes my food anxiety worse.)

It's absolutely fine. Take it out and put it on the side and it'll be defrosted by the dinner time.

I always take frozen food out and leave over night before I go to bed and then back in the fridge first thing until later in the day. Takes way too long to defrost on the fridge.

Next time cook of from frozen.

piedbeauty · 02/04/2023 17:12

It's defrosted. Cooking now!
