So I am confused by the rules here. Most of these products state that they are 'packaged in a protective atmosphere' so once you open them they have to be eaten right away.
Does this mean you can't decant half of it into an airtight box to eat the next day? (spreading it over two day's meals).

If not, why the heck does the packet say it is resealable in the front? If you see the pic there are printed scissor markings which suggests using after opening.

I don't freeze chicken so would prefer to spread a pack over two days, is this safe? I've done it many times and never thought it was a problem.

Its fine to put some in some tuppaware and use another day

I'd use some the next day.

The protective atmosphere is usually an inert (non reactive) that slows down the natural deterioration of the food. Salads for example have very reactive enzymes that cause deterioration, but they need oxygen to work - so if you remove the oxygen the food (leaves) will last longer Meat products may have oxygen as the protective gas as it will keep the meat red. Once that is used up the packaging will go into a 'dome' shape (be pulled in) and the meat will start to go brown - but it is still safe to eat. Having said all that I would be careful with chicken. I always smell mine and rinse if it's a bit 'off' We haven't been ill yet! By the way, it is perfectly OK to freeze chicken as home

Where does that one say to use immediately? It says its resealable?

SmileyClare · 02/04/2023 13:59

Agree it’s fine to do this.

An alternative is to separate the raw chicken when you buy it and freeze half in a freezer bag or similar.

As long as you’re following safe guidelines when storing, handling and cooking chicken, you can avoid food poisoning.

There’s more detailed information online; the instructions on the packaging can be misleading.

Thanks for the advice.
It says it in the additional 'usage' statement below the product on the site.
I only eat meat twice per week so would prefer to spread it over 2 days. Eating all of this in one meal would be a bit much for me and too expensive.
