Things that are worth paying a bit extra for

Just spent the best part of 45 minutes with DC going through numerous (5 - DC is a stationery fiend!) and doing an audit of all the working pens/pencils/felt tips/colouring pencils etc.
Never ceases to amaze me how disheartening it is when the leads in the pencils/colouring pencils constantly snap when you are trying to sharpen them.
The branded ones were a dream in comparison.
Pic (hopefully attached) shows the difference in quality.
The staedtler ones were great.
The ones from unknown origin had chipped wood and snapped leads.
There was even one that could not be sharpened! The wood just wouldn't 'give'.

What things in your life do you consider it worthwhile to pay a bit extra for?
Colouring pencils and pencils are now firmly in my list.
Bin bags too.
Split bin bags are not a pleasant experience!

Mayonnaise, tinned tomatoes, pasta.

I bought cheap Asda pasta yesterday. It is WEIRD. It's strangely overcooked and undercooked at the same time. Gritty and slimy. Unfortunately I bought 3kg (we eat a lot of pasta!). I think I'll have to return the unopened packets because it is disgusting.

Asda basics pasta is really bad, never thought I'd notice but it's exactly like you describe- awful

Washing up liquid - nothing beats fairy
Tea bags & coffee
Oven chips - McCains home style are the best
Jam
Butter
Ham & meats

So MANY things! SAUSAGES!!

Plus Yes to good bread, raw nuts, quality fruit and veg, towels, face/skin cream/lotion, knitwear, shoes/boots/socks, quality supportive pillows, definitely decent bin bags which don't split as soon as you take them out of the bin, depositing garbage on your floor, etc etc 🌹

Tea
Coffee
Toilet and kitchen roll
Batteries
School shoes
Dog food
Branded tinned foods, condiments etc

Now my kids are past the toddler stage and don’t get dirty as easily, I also get them a mix of cheaper and slightly more expensive clothes. I’ve noticed the clothes from places like M&S, Next etc last longer than the George ones for example.

Art supplies are a big one. I’ve only ever bought Crayola, Staedtler etc for my kids as I remember how frustrating it was using cheap pencils and pens when I was young and they went done so easily.

Also, I hate cheap Lego, it has to be the brand.

I always bought cheap shampoo etc. until my friend started buying me L'Occitane stuff. Their shampoo is amazing and the shower gel lasts forever. I'm
Converted.

What L'Occitane shampoo and conditioner do you use? There are a lot of different ones on Amazon

Zarzuela · 02/04/2023 15:54

Tea (leaf tea from a tea company)
Bedding
Running trainers
Boots
Naturli vegan spread-a good buttery taste
DD's school pens
DD's bras

Lunch at work because there's an amazing salad bar so is far healthier and tastier than anything I would make and it's only once or twice a week thanks to postCovid office closures.

We still have a lot of the coloured pencils from when I was kid and the quality is way better than packs she's been given over the years.

Scissors - from kitchen scissors all the way up to fabric scissors, if you go cheap you'll curse while you use them.
Coffee
Hairbrush, doesn't need to be hugely expensive but the cheap supermarket ones just ruin my hair

Good Shoes
Leg space on flights
Better hotel rooms

Cosmosgrowinmygarden · 02/04/2023 16:18

A couple of posters have mentioned Weetabix - have you tried Waitrose? My OH loves it, he doesn’t like the M&S version or ASDA, only Waitrose.

Bed sheets and pillow cases. But be careful once you start you cannot go back to the cheaper ones...

@pastatonight any recommendations?! I am so over repeatedly buying crap no matter how hard I true (as cost doesn't always equal quality!!)

spuddel · 02/04/2023 16:43

Agree with the poster who said cheap perfume is so not worth it. I have a terrible Diptyque perfume habit, that and their candles. Nothing smells as good in comparison now.

I am quite happy to buy cheap tinned tomatoes as I can't tell the difference once they're cooked down in a sauce. The Staedtler pencils are all I ever bought ds for school and they truly lasted. Apart from when they were stolen in class obvs.

I spend a lot on high thread count Egyptian cotton bedding, love going into a cool bed. A Yves Delorme set I bought 19 years ago is still going strong and still feels like heaven so it's been worth every penny and some.

RedRosie · 02/04/2023 16:46

Mattress, loo roll, most food (especially fruit and veg, organic dairy products, bread from the bakery), the best quality clothes possible in natural fabrics etc.

Buying less but better when possible.
