Best way to learn to run 5k then 10k?

From experience what would you say is the best way for somebody to achieve a reasonable 5k time? Best training programme or method? Is the couch to 5 k the best way?

I like the book Running Made Easy. It's probably similar to couch to 5k but I found it quite inspiring.

Couch to 5k. There are a lot of beginners 10k training plans

Bumply · 02/04/2023 10:48

Couch to 5k is good if you've never run before.
If you're already able to run 6k, but want to improve your time and start to extend to 20k there are plans you can follow, but also consider joining a running club as I've found that brilliant at making you push yourself almost without noticing.

Couch to 5k, preferably with a running club who will give you advice and support you afterwards with training to get to 10k.

Couch to 5k 100% it helped me get to 5k. Don't even worry about repeating weeks, I did a few weeks twice over because I didn't feel fit enough to move on, if you repeat weeks it also helps you stay in shape longer as I know people who've completed C25K then just given up.
I dunno how to progress to 10K but I would just focus on 5k to start with. That way when you're running 2.5k you can think wow I'm halfway already (not oh god I'm only doing a quarter of 10k!)

Is 3 times a week enough? Or for running fitness is it better to commit to say 20-30 mins but every day?

Three times a week is enough. It’s best not to run every day.

kilos · 02/04/2023 11:01

C25K is definitely the way to do it. Once I could comfortably run 5k I added a km each time I ran and it didn't take long to run 10k. I found once I could run 5k I could just keep going.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 02/04/2023 11:03

Couch to 5k three times a week (I do Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday). It genuinely took me from being so unfit I couldn’t run the 6 x 1 minute day one intervals, to being able to run 5k. I freestyled it a lot, repeated days / weeks, dropped back a step when I was struggling, but having it as an overall guide was invaluable.

Sleepthief · 02/04/2023 11:04

There's an app called 10K runner, which follows the couch to 5k principles (but without the sudden jump from 8mins to 20!) It costs £11 for a lifetime subscription, but I've gone back to it time and again.

Sleepthief · 02/04/2023 11:05

I should have added once you get to 5k, it builds you up to 10km similarly gradually.

Ok thanks all. I just need to get started. I so want to do it but struggle with self discipline.

The key to improvement is consistency- 3 times a week, week after week. I do 2 shorter runs done by time (20-30 mins) and then 1 long run done by time. I keep this to the same distance until I’m comfortable with the distance then increase by 10-20 % and repeat. I often also do parkrun on a Saturday morning as well.
if I fall off the exercise wagon if likes gets busy or I’m ill. I start back with 2 mins runs and use parkrun as my long run until I back running 5 km comfortably and then add in a further official long run. When I’m aiming to get faster, I do hill repeats instead of a 20 min run and add little sprints into each of my runs towards the end. My DH does tempo and threshold runs etc but I don’t go to that level. I also do CrossFit which is brilliant for building muscle and getting flexibility back.

ParkrunPlodder · 02/04/2023 12:14

Sorry 20 mins runs not 2 mins!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/04/2023 12:24

Couch to 5k
Then add a k a week or fortnight to get to 10.

forloves · 02/04/2023 12:25

Really useful info @ParkrunPlodder thank you!
