How Do I Not Bring The Beach Home With Me

Wellfedandfedup · 01/04/2023 14:02

I know I'm a minority here but I don't like the beach. I hate the sand covered children, the food which inevitably gets sand in it. The sand in the car. The wet sandy clothes which have to come in the house. I hate being this miserable. My children fucking love the beach and I feel like a monster for hating it and seldom taking them.

I feel like maybe if I have an effective desanding plan that begins in the carpark I might enjoy it more? Is that what you're all doing and that's why you enjoy it more? Once the clothes get wet AND sandy I've not got a clue how to deal with it.
TIA if you read this ridiculousness and offer me advice.

Talcum powder! When you rub it in it takes the sand off of skin. You’re welcome!

CC4712 · 01/04/2023 14:06

I've heard that talc gets sand off the skin easily.

I'd put a towel on each seat in the car before you go to the beach- draped from the headrest, down the seat and then onto the floor to catch any additional sand. This can be removed and shaken out at home.

Not sure about the sand in the food- could you eat in a park near the beach, but not whilst sitting on the sand?

Yep! Talc is a game changer.

I hate sand too. So I limit time on the beach to playing. No food and minimal stuff.

we live near a sandy beach.

my top tip: swimming towels, the thin microfibre kind. I've also seen them in cotton/linen fabric.

one shake and flick and the sand is off.

and they are also great at getting wet sand off feet.

we also use them to sit on the beach for the same reason.

as we live so close, we don't take food.

Yep there's a park actually with picnic benches. Ok no food. Seems like a no brainer but we often go with other people who bring their picnics to beach.

Why are the clothes wet and sandy? Take them off before they get wet.

greenacrylicpaint · 01/04/2023 15:06

sand angels are only allowed in swimwear Grin

Avarua2 · 01/04/2023 15:09

Ha I can't help you. I live at the beach and my car, kids, dog and bag are regularly covered in sand. I've given up. Bucket at the backdoor for sandy legs is all we do. Kids are responsible for rinsing and hanging their own swimwear. Car remains filthy.

RandomMess · 01/04/2023 15:10

Find a beach with stones and no sand Wink

ghostbusters · 01/04/2023 15:12

My kids always end up in the sea, even when they promise not to, it's like they are drawn to the sea like a magnet. Even in winter, and we live in north-ish Scotland
Swimming shorts and rash vest if it's warm enough. Cotton joggers seem worse when wet and sandy.
We take food but only eat lunch, no snacking or eating at a leisurely pace. Do talc on hand before eating. No one is allowed to bring sand onto the blanket, sandy feet have to hang over the edge.

Workinghardeveryday · 01/04/2023 15:13

So how do you get sans out of wet clothes? Leggings, joggers etc?

Workinghardeveryday · 01/04/2023 15:14

I hate sand too, drives me nuts - and don’t get me started on glitter…. Banned in our house 😁

DinosApple · 01/04/2023 15:44

Talc. Rinse costumes in the sea and put in a plastic bags, rinse again then wash.
Talc for sandy skin and shoes, gets the worst off.

Greydogs123 · 01/04/2023 16:01

Go to beaches without sand! We live near a lovely pebbly beach and I love that I never have to bother about sand. When we do go to sandy ones on holiday I always take talc, it’s very effective.

let it dry and shake and brush it off.

don't rinse sandy clothing in a sink or shower/bath or put sandy clothes in the washer.

feliciabirthgiver · 01/04/2023 16:31

I can highly recommend a Mud Daddy which is a potable shower I bought for the dog. It works brilliantly on sandy feet and legs too and we all get back into the car sand free.

RunnyPaint · 01/04/2023 16:40

I live by the beach, so rarely have to worry about the car being sandy, but would old fitted sheets over the seats help? In the house we have dedicated boxes and bags for the beach stuff to minimise cross-contamination. When we get back, I put everything out on the line and shake the sand out once dry before washing or putting back in the beach bag. Particularly sandy people get hosed down in the back garden. Still have sand trailed through the house, as there is no side passage...

The next best tip for avoiding sand in food is to make sure everyone has their own packed entirely separately, as it's the sharing with careless people that makes it so messy!

MustBeThursday · 01/04/2023 16:51

I absolutely hate sand. I wear those neoprene shoes so I don't have to stand on it barefoot. We strip out of any sandy shoes/clothes before we get in the car. All goes in one bag. The bag gets unpacked in the garden and put out to dry then the sand can be brushed off once it's dried out. The talc trick has been a game changer to get sand off skin before putting non sandy clothes/shoes back on

Jellycatspyjamas · 01/04/2023 16:57

Change of clothes in the car, change into clean clothes, put sandy wet clothes in a bag, hang out to dry and shake sand off outside.

Talc for getting sand off skin.

Picnic at a picnic table away from the beach.

Beach towels on car seats for travelling home.

Or I just resign myself to hoovering the car.

MargaretThursday · 01/04/2023 17:22

Ds has a bit of a phobia about sand on anything. Makes going down to the beach difficult, although he does actually love it when he's got used to the idea, then we have 6 weeks of worry every time he sees some sand.

The best thing we've found is to use a beach where you can sit on the sea wall or similar. This means that you don't get as much sand all over your stuff, plus you can dry off, then brush the sand off and not get more on.

VikingLady · 01/04/2023 17:32

I change the kids before we go home. And if you have a snack in the picnic area before you do that, most of the sand should dry enough to drop off them.

soupmaker · 01/04/2023 17:45

We take the thin swimming towels, camping chairs for sitting on and hanging things off, and no-one is allowed in the water unless in swimsuit or wet suit. Talc for drying off legs and all suits and beach shoes rinsed in the sea to get the worst of the sand off and into poly bags for return journey.

Picnic is always kept in a zip up cool bag and in Tupperware boxes in the cool bag. It hangs on a chair and must not touch sand!

We're west coast of Scotland and love a beach day. I love getting in the sea with the kids and bobbing about in my wetsuit. They snorkel despite the cold.

But, I bloody hate sand. Husband has a fancy hand held hoover that gets out all the sand out the car.

FusionChefGeoff · 01/04/2023 17:46

Dustpan brush in the bag makes a massive difference. Dust everything down methodically before you put it away.

Whatabouterry · 01/04/2023 17:51

I like these wetsuit changing mats. You can get changed on them and then pull the drawstring and enclose all the Sandy swimwear in a self contained bag.
