Pizza Ovens - How Much?!?!

Emilypost · 31/03/2023 11:57

Item in The Times about the popularity of specialist pizza ovens and how popular they becoming.
Lakeland £299 -sales up 143% Gozney £1,800, sold out in days.
I accept I am not an expert cook, I make pizza occasionally. It is always eaten up. Would I get much better results from one of these?

Unless you are an Italian restaurant, you don't need a pizza oven.

TonTonMacoute · 31/03/2023 12:02

Yes.

We have an Ooni and the pizzas you get from them are out of this world for very little effort. You can't get a domestic oven as hot (400-500 degrees).

Is it worth spending £300 for that? Only you can say. We live very rurally, I don't even know where the nearest pizza place is. We use it a lot in the summer so for us it's definitely worth it

MallMoo · 31/03/2023 12:02

Yes we love our pizza oven! We purchased an Ooni a couple of years ago and it gets used all year round (when not raining) and never order take away pizza anymore

1000000000% it is game changer to the taste and rise in the dough. Ooni gas one in garden is wonderful

Frenchfancy · 31/03/2023 12:04

Another Ooni lover here. But it is not for the faint hearted. Unless you are prepared to put effort into making a really good dough, and you don't mind the pizzas arriving one after another rather than all at once it isn't worth it.

We love it because we cook and eat outside. We use it way more than the BBQ

sparebooks · 31/03/2023 12:05

Do you have to make your own pizza/dough or can you stick a supermarket one in it?

FullBloom · 31/03/2023 12:06

Can anyone tell me whether they cook anything other than pizza in theirs? I don't even know if that's possible.

Eve · 31/03/2023 12:07

we have an OOni as well and there is no comparison with pizza cooked in an oven.

My DS has now mastered the skill of making them!

LeafHunter · 31/03/2023 12:11

We have an ooni. Im coeliac and DH has mastered GF pizza in there. It’s brilliant. Lots of recipes for other stuff online but we only do pizza. It’s an easy thing to make when friends are coming round.

eurochick · 31/03/2023 12:18

We got one during lockdown. Holidays were cancelled so we figured we might as well make socialising in the garden as good as possible! We do use ours quite a bit. The pizzas are fantastic. We take it on a group camping trip we do and cook for everyone with it. We also set up a pizza station at our street's jubilee party last year. It was a big hit.

You can do, but I haven't got round to it.

Make your own!

Emilypost · 31/03/2023 14:58

Thanks for all the comments, I am going to try a stone in my oven and make pizza a regular dish.
How many of you use strong flour?
I cannot get on with wholemeal flour. Seems to go dry on me.

For a bit of fun my partner knocked up a pizza oven in our garden using old paving slabs and house bricks that were just going spare in the garden. We didn’t know if it would work but this will be our third summer using it. The pizzas are always amazing.

ControversialSuggestion · 31/03/2023 15:05

00 flour, and prove in the fridge overnight. A bit more salt than the recipe says works for me.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/03/2023 15:05

I've thought about it but I hate making pizza dough and can never get it as thin as I'd like.

We also have many excellent pizza places round here. I had Pizza Luxe yesterday, it was amazing, so I've decided that I'll just go out for pizza rather than spend ££££s on an oven I have to store and make dough to use.

prescribingmum · 31/03/2023 15:09

Have an electric table top one which cost around £100 in 2019 - it is my favourite kitchen appliance. Not the same as ooni etc but does exactly what I need it to and is more portable

Takes 2-3nins mins to heat up and then each pizza cooks in under 5 minutes. Have mastered my own dough recipe and roll it out extremely thin. We never order take away pizzas and rarely eat out either as our home version is so much better

Emilypost · 31/03/2023 15:32

@MySweetBaboo I like the sound of making your own oven, we have plenty of logs. Do you cook the pizza directly on the slab? Well scrubbed obvs.

We put the pizza on a pizza tray like we would if we were using the oven.

Piscesmumma1978 · 31/03/2023 15:38

We have an Ooni. It was on a deal in 2021 so looks like we got a bargain!

We still haven't mastered the perfect dough yet 😂 We are a family of 6 so takeaway is a fortune. This is way cheaper.

Garlic pizza bread is amazing in it 🥰

CombatBarbie · 31/03/2023 15:49

We've got a wood fired one and they are ace. Really good when entertaining in the summer. Kids help make the dough and everyone makes their own personalised topped one.

But like pancakes though..... First one always ends up in the bin 🙈

Tomnooktoldmeto · 31/03/2023 16:07

We have a table top one as we’re a family of coeliac’s. Best investment ever, I use a very expensive gluten free flour from Italy and the pizzas are so good you can’t tell they’re gluten free

I have also made dough balls in it and tonight I’m doing naan breads

reluctantbrit · 31/03/2023 16:14

We have one and I am in two minds. Ours can do gas or wood but the wood one is very fiddly to operate. But it taste so much better.

I make my own dough for most pizzas but the outdoor oven dough is different and takes longer to rise, so it needs to be taken into account.

We will try kebabs in it if it ever stops raining and getting warm enough to sit outside for longer.

We bought it with a bonus payment I got, so a reward for months of extra work.

caringcarer · 31/03/2023 16:19

@eurochick, we got one in lockdown as well. One of the best purchases we ever made. We use strong flour. DH makes the dough and a fabulous tomato sauce. We even make a mozzarella stuffed crust. The difference between the pizzas from pizza oven and the ones we used to make in oven is huge. Pizza ovens go to such high temperature so pizza cooks and dough rises in about 5 mins per pizza. We send DH our orders and he makes them. Lovely in summer or if guests come. My niece is often inviting herself over if she knows it's pizza for dinner.

caringcarer · 31/03/2023 16:19

DH also makes a garlic bread too.
