Has anyone else never been on holiday?

I've been away for a couple of nights a few times but never been on holiday, nor am I likely to. I feel like an oddity and it does get me down - someone recently laughed at me when I told them. When DH and I spend a couple of nights away (nothing fancy, a Travelodge or similar in a nearby city) I've really enjoyed it and would love to know what it feels like to get excited for a week away.

Just feeling a bit down today because life feels like such a slog right now and I'd love a holiday more than ever!

Is it as unusual as I think it is to have never been on holiday or are there loads of us?!

We've never been on holiday.
Mixture of lots of pets and lack of funds.
Now I'm a teacher, which limits it further.

I don't think it's odd.

It always makes me feel sorry for people that 'need' a holiday or ' live for their holidays.'

If your day to day life is that awful that you need to escape it then do something to change it!

Often they have a fab time and then come back and after a couple of weeks are more depressed than before they went as they have the credit card bills to pay too!

Have you tried Hoseasons? You can search by area and then sort by price

Just discovered this https://www.disabledholidays.com/

This thread really shows the wealth divide.
I hope you get the opportunity to travel one day OP.

I dont really understand your comment....I thought everyone had tried to genuinely help, no one has passed comments on holidaying at home, or recommended holidays abroad costing ££££. Where is the wealth divide?

PeacheyPeach · 30/03/2023 21:39

Op, were is the nearest holiday destination to you, that you can travel to by public transport?

Were I am based North Wales is the closest to what I'd call a holiday ( beach, fish and chips, etc) so what i would do is have a look on airbnb for a little house or apartment and UK caravan owners direct and even look on Facebook at holiday homes, see if there is something that is reasonable enough, especially as its still out of season so prices might be lower.
And looking at saver deals for train tickets might help also

Holidays from £600pw, sadly way out of our price range, but thank you for finding it 💐

There are lots of things that I do and consider a holiday... so didn't be intimidated by people who fry on a beach for 2 weeks every summer or go on safari and a 16 hour flight in economy (=done the economy flight, never again!)
And no, you don't have to go abroad for a holiday either- there are some fantastic & unique places well worth your time the UK too!!
PS: You are allowed to do wild camping in Scotland if you want an unconventional holiday!

Hi OP, have you tried looking on Skyscanner or kayak for flight tickets? If you can go any time of the year look for random cheap flights. There are lots of flights under £59. I've found return flights to Luxembourg for £17 before. However before booking the flights have a brief look at how much accommodation will cost you. Book flights and accommodation separately it's cheaper than a package deal!

You can also just do a day trip, early morning flight and late night return or just 2/3 days away. Sometimes a week is just too expensive.

I did a quick search and £39 for a day trip to Valencia, Spain in May. I'm sure if you have a browse you can find cheaper away days too but don't leave it till summer holidays as the price triples!!

I meant under £50*

It takes a bit of searching and finding flights at the right time but I always find this cheaper than a staycation in the UK.

Please do not be disheartened as I'm a single mum on £26k, live in expensive London ( universal credit helps with rent), but with good planning I'm able to have a relaxing by time.

It might be worth checking if you're entitled to PIP or UC. Can use turn2us to see if you'd be entitled to any benefits as a family x

You are married to the love of your life, and he has promised to love you forever.
That is great!
I have been on many holidays, but on the other hand I am eternally single.

I hope you find something, I've always been poor but managed to have some good holidays, albeit on a budget.Covid and my age ( can't be doing with too much hassle) has put paid to much of it but hopefully things will settle down, price wise.
As long as I can get to the seaside now and again, I am happy. I get to London regularly and just being by the river does me good.
I wish I had a really good up to date suggestion! I would save up , even if it's a modest amount, and just keep an eye out for good deals, sign up with holiday companies they will email you.Wowcher , Groupon etc have some good offers on breaks away. Good luck!

PomTiddlyPomPom · 26/07/2023 08:01

I don't go away very often, I get what you mean about people thinking you are uncultured!
To be honest it just makes me laugh when I can see Sharon in the office thinking 'poor PomTiddly' has no idea about the world just before she jets off to an all inclusive in Spain for a week and spends every day by the pool and every night in the same bar!
Culture comes in many different forms, reading and watching documentaries can give you a much better idea of somewhere's history and culture than a week or two in a tourist destination!
I know that doesn't help with the FOMO, we did the Sun £9.50 holidays a couple of times when the kids were little, I think when we totted everything up including fuel and food etc it came to about £150 (2 adults & 2 children so may work out a fair bit less for you) so I would definitely look into those and see if any of them are suitable.
