I’m thinking of retraining as a midwife and would love to hear from midwives as to what the job is really like. I’ve given birth 3 times so have a view from that side but not the realities of it really. I’m not sure if I’m looking at the job with rose tinted glasses and could use some real life experiences please!
I am qualified in a medical profession (veterinary nursing) but nothing relating to human healthcare. I have skills that would transfer but they wouldn’t be taken into account by unis. I understand there would be hard bits of the job and think I would cope.
I have 3 young DC. I would need to do an access course then the 3 year degree. I’m 35 now so would be potentially 40 by the time I qualify- is this too late? Are there many midwives starting out at this age?
How intense is the training and how academic? I’m reasonably good with essay based questions and anatomy but maths is a weakness.
Is the training something likely to be manageable with nursery aged children and still be able to have a life?
Once qualified, what’s the work- life balance like? Am I going to still be able to enjoy my own kids or is it a job that will consume everything?!
Night shifts, how awful are they in terms of managing with other things outside of work?
Any other information would be much appreciated!!
