What’s your goals for the next 5 years?

I was at a work event today where an ice breaker type thing was asking you to consider your goals for the next 5 years. I honestly couldn’t think of any, has given me some food for thought! It makes me nervous to even think that far ahead.

anyone willing to share the things they would hope to achieve over the next 5 years? does anyone actively sit down and plan for these things? I have short term goals like losing weight, taking a holiday etc but 5 years seems a long time

No. Am I supposed to have any?

JamSandle · 29/03/2023 17:42

I dont really. I appreciate some people might have one like buy a house, pay off mortgage or have a baby. But I just don't think that far ahead. It gives me a nervous feeling. You never know what might happen.

Mine was to be offered voluntary redundancy and retire before 60.

I was offered it three weeks ago and leave end of April one month after my 57th birthday.

Stay alive. Don't drop dead from the chronic medical condition threatening to un-alive me at some random point.

But more positively, I'd like to see DD1 get some adequate A-levels, and see DS some brilliant GCSEs.

SoggyGround · 29/03/2023 18:05

It's an interesting question, and one that me and my OH were discussing the other day, weirdly because it was on MAFS Australia 🙈 (lol don't judge me). The couples were discussing their future plans and what was important to them. I get that we're not going to take advice from MAFS but we got talking about how we should probably have a think about what we want eg moving house etc.

Divorce
<helpful?>

Take the teenagers to every continent (perhaps omitting Antarctica although there is an eclipse that technically if we got on a cruise and sailed into the waters we could tick that off).

Bessica1970 · 29/03/2023 19:41

I do - I have a rolling five year plan, and I break it down into one year chunks to keep me on track. I started 8 years ago and have hit my target each year. They're career targets and fairly ambitious but achievable if I stay goal oriented.

This year my aim is to get my next promotion.

Woodywasatwat · 29/03/2023 19:42

I just don’t want anymore catastrophes to happen in my life.

I’ve learned the hard way that planning gets me nowhere.

That my mental health survives the ASD/ADHD assessment journey with DD and that she receives the results in her GCSE this year to enable her to do the A-Level she wishes for and later study history at uni.

Based on how the last 2 years were I don't think there is any space for other plans.

Maybe travelling when DD is at uni (if point one in the plan works) as several travel ideas just don't work with her.

Hedjwitch · 29/03/2023 20:04

To pay off my mortgage
To have all DCs moved out and independent
To be able to retire

katmarie · 29/03/2023 20:08

Pay off our debts
Move house, closer to my family
Make some progress in my career, enough to put me into the next tax bracket (increasing my salary by 1/3 basically)
Do a masters degree

That's my loose plan for the next 5 years.

SallyWD · 29/03/2023 20:09

Oh God, I live day to day. I just really want to maintain good health (I have a history of cancer) and earn a little more money than I do now.

cassiatwenty · 29/03/2023 20:20

Get married to a fit Northerner who's a football player 😍

coodawoodashooda · 29/03/2023 20:23

To keep the house tidy?

LittleLentils · 29/03/2023 20:27

Decide if I want kids or not (but I've been mulling over this for 2 years now...)
Move to London
Travel more (got things booked so this seems achievable)
Do a Maths course at college
Be more selfless with my time

Tealknittedjumpers · 29/03/2023 20:29

Get my house decorated and garden all nice with a vegetable patch. Be earning at least a part time wage once dd is at school to be able to start a pension and have more nice house things/holidays/clothes Also to become fluent in a foreign language. To be back being as fit as I was pre pregnancy. Although I'm hoping to get the fitness sorted in a year or two. I'd also like to complete a piece of education as haven't done so since A levels. To learn a few more DIY skills. Am considering doing an electrician's course at some point to have those skills, but not sure if I can fit it in. Am asking a lot of myself but it's good to dream.

Mostly a long list of holidays 😬 we've achieved most of those early goals like marriage, house, schools settled etc. In terms of my career I want to be on six figures by the time I'm 40 (which is 5 years).

user143777534 · 29/03/2023 20:54

One final promotion which takes me to the top of the ladder.
Pay the mortgage off (likely to take 7 years but might manage in 5)
Get both kids into and nearly out of uni
Get fit enough to survive coming off HRT

NewmummyJ · 29/03/2023 20:54

Stay alive and not go bankrupt...

Easterfunbun · 29/03/2023 20:59

I always have goals, particularly ones that would span 5 years. I plan to complete my masters within this time frame or potentially start teacher training. Further study anyhow.

FeetOnly · 29/03/2023 21:04

I would like to get a job but I don't know where to start.

Dragonsmother · 29/03/2023 21:31

Pay off my debt!
2027 I will be debt free

cariadlet · 29/03/2023 21:40

Retire early.
Move abroad.

It's actually my 4 year plan.
