There is a thread asking the same question about mortgage .. I was shocked how low it is compared with rent . It's been a thing for a long time that rent is often more than a mortgage but will be interested so see what the difference is ..

I'll kick off. Lost my house in my divorce. Ex went home (overseas) I had to rent.

Take home £2200
Rent £1000.

Typo, take home actually £4000

Chowtime · 28/03/2023 19:32

It's interesting that the people over in the mortgage thread have actually given their answers in percentages but in the rental thread they haven't worked out the percentage as requested.

Why do you think that is?

emituofo · 28/03/2023 19:40

used to be 37% a few years ago but now 20%.

Salary has gone up but our rent has so far remained the same thanks to our kind landlord, this enables us to save 30-40% of income each month.

caringcarer · 28/03/2023 19:45

Apart from cheese, crackers and wine others seem to be paying about 50 percent which is too high.

Thighdentitycrisis · 28/03/2023 19:50

Nearly 50% and I am in social housing. I couldn’t afford market rent here

@Chowtime It's interesting that some people gain a feeling of superiority by taunting those they view as beneath them. It's as though they feel as if they have greater character than the other person, making them relish in the power and control that comes from belittling them. Perhaps it also serves as an outlet for frustration, dissatisfaction, depression and insecurity. Who knows, it's all just so interesting.

Beezknees · 28/03/2023 20:06

Total income £2200 (combination of full time salary, Universal Credit and child benefit but I didn't include child maintenance) rent was £470 but increasing to £500pm from April (social housing). So around 22%.

Tweezeme1 · 28/03/2023 20:06

Rent £1900
joint take home pay £4300

@Beezknees Because they are being v goady. People paying rent can't possibly be able to do the math. God I hate MN. Sorry OP.

dawnc27 · 28/03/2023 20:16

Well we cant feed ourselves healthy food, or go on proper holidays. How are we expected to work out real grown up stuff that only the rich and privilaged can

Winter2020 · 28/03/2023 20:26

When you ask about mortgages you will include people who have been paying their mortgage for 20 years and it gets relatively cheaper and of course one day finishes.

Rent is more likely to stay closer to market rate even after 20 years. The rental payments might be closer to the mortgages of recent first time buyers though.
