  • German midwife who dared challenge patriarchal attitudes towards childbirth
  • Surmounted male colleagues' jealous attacks to her professional reputation, later proven to be groundless
  • First German to write a book on obstetrics from a woman's point of view
  • 'The Court Midwife' was certified as an official medical textbook. Vastly improved maternal and infant health. Went on to have global significance
  • Provided free services to underprivileged women. Became known for her ability to guide women safely through difficult and dangerous births. Led to her delivering the royal babies
  • Delivered 6200 infants in her lifetime

Hooray for the incredible Midwife Siegemund!

I must admit I'd never heard of her either, until my almanac news feed informed me that her groundbreaking work was given 'official medical textbook' status on this day in 1690!
