odd question
but do you say it rhyming with Laugh,
ie plarstic

or hat, plastic

Well I pronounce laugh as laff and plastic rhymes with that, though for some reason to most of my southern friends these words do not rhyme.

longestlurkerever · 28/03/2023 05:55

Well, not rhyme, but have the same vowel sound

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/03/2023 05:55

Short A
as in hat. But I'm from East Anglia, it would be different elsewhere

KEG05 · 28/03/2023 05:57

Plah stick

MuffinToSeeHere · 28/03/2023 05:57

Plastic doesn't rhyme with laugh where I am. It rhymes with fantastic, drastic and gymnastic none of which sound like laugh but that's because when I say them the 'a' sound isn't drawn out to make an 'ar' sound. Surely like many words it depends on your accent.

PinkSyCo · 28/03/2023 06:01

Plastic fantastic. Only very posh people say ‘plarstic’.

pilates · 28/03/2023 06:03

Plastic fantastic here - south eat

ScentOfAMemory · 28/03/2023 06:03

Phonetic dictionaries give the (standard UK) pronunciation as having a short "a" (same one as "cat")

I think people who do this think it's one of the words (bath, grass etc) that has a different pronunciation in the north than the south.

Crumpetdisappointment · 28/03/2023 06:05

thank you
i did wonder about using laugh
a short a i should have said
or CAT
so posh people say PLARSTIC

Or faux posh. I've never heard an actually posh person say it like that, although I don't fraternise with landed gentry.

No. People who don't know that plastic has a short vowel /plæstik/ pronounce it with a long one /pla:stik/.

Fozzleyplum · 28/03/2023 06:13

I think it has a short a, even for those who would use a long a in words like " bath". People who are trying to change their way of speaking to sound more "posh", sometimes over- correct, and lengthen vowels that should always be short.

There isn't an R in plastic

ImAvingOops · 28/03/2023 08:36

It has a short 'a'. Only pretentious twats would say plarstic.

MeanderingGently · 28/03/2023 08:47

I have a southern accent which pronounces 'laugh' as 'larf'.

But plastic is pronounced as 'plah-stick' even if you're so-called posh.
However, if someone is pretending to be posh, they often make mistakes as to which words they pronounced with a long drawn-out 'a' sound, and plastic is one of those words.

So are words like 'pate' and 'gas' for instance....I once had some pretentious person try to talk to me about paying their 'gars-bill' (gas bill) - twat!

BlueBananaLlama · 28/03/2023 09:37

I’ve had to try this out loud to remember how I pronounce it. I use both short and long vowel sounds in quite a few words, depending on context, in words like laugh and grass. I’d say “plastic bag” with a short a, but “plastic container” with a long one.

Probably as a result of growing up in the West Country, but with parents from Wales and the North East.

ScentOfAMemory · 28/03/2023 09:53

Some words with a short "a" (/æ/) in other regions are pronounced with a long "a" (/a:/) in some parts of the NE. "Plaster" is one. I'm guessing that's where "plastic" with a long "a" would come from, though it's not one I've come across personally.

offencint · 28/03/2023 09:59

I have an accent where 'glass' 'bath' 'laugh' are pronounced with a long 'a' but not plastic, plastic should be a short 'a'.

Plahh-stic with a long 'a' doesn't sound 'posh' upper class at all, but faux posh, used by someone who thinks it is correct.

offencint · 28/03/2023 10:00

Plaster is a long 'a' however. Just to confuse!

MarchMadness23 · 28/03/2023 10:16

everything sounds wrong now 😵‍💫😵‍💫

plAstik short a like cat.

although plastic bag & plastic box have slightly different pronunciations I feel it has something to do with the plastic in the box one having more emphasis (tgat it's not cardboard) & a bag it's more a given, so less emphasis.

need ☕️

Kanaloa · 28/03/2023 10:18

I pronounce it with a flat A. As in ‘plastic fantastic.’ I think it’s more of an accent thing.
