Emergency SOS text received, from a person I knew 15 yrs ago but not met since 2011

I received an SOS text from Apple, with a location of someone I knew 15 yrs ago. We worked together in a call centre but have not been in touch since 2011 and I didn't have her number stored on my phone. I looked up the number on WhatsApp- the photo matches the person. Location matches where she lives.

I initially thought it was a scam but thought best be safe- called her number, no answer, left a message on her voicemail. I sent her a WhatsApp too.

Have I been scammed? I've never heard or seen of this type of message before but what flagged up my doubt is that it said I was contacted as I'm listed as an emergency contact- which I know can't be true. I do wonder if my name was accessible from contact list due to my surname or first name.

Have I done something stupid here? anyone else experience this?

@Bushra385 Hey, you need to start your own thread - maybe in chat? Go to the chat topic and select top right little arrow with a drop-down menu: select start thread and go from there 😊

It's a scam.

But how and what if no money involved?

Her contacts list has been hacked and they have sent messages to everyone on it. Scam. Just block the number.

A scam is operated in order to extract money most of the time so what would be the purpose of this as a scam????

Good on you for following through. You never know with these sorts of things and if you found out later things were dire, then you know you did your best.

Nah, why would a scam just send a location?? It didn’t ask for money or anything. Pretty lame scam

Just got off the phone with 101 after an hour long wait. They did send officers out. All in order- her phone was broken and sent messages to random contacts.

Glad she's ok. Obvs not heard back but this all makes sense now.

pheeewwww

Thanks everyone for being here and supportive

Well done OP.
glad you acted how you did, worrying how many people would automatically assume it’s a scam and ignore this alert for help.

She has probably added you as ICE on iPhone by mistake. So far I have made an old friend, my hairdressers and the post office my ICE.

Two police officers knocked at our door a few months ago. They asked if a man called James lived next door and said they’d had an emergency alert from his Apple Watch, saying he had fallen and was lying on the floor They’d knocked at the door and looked round the house from the outside, but there was no reply. They didn’t have a James listed as living there.
We’ve lived here for twenty years and there has never been a Frank next door. They told us not to worry and, just as they were leaving, my partner said, “Hang on isn’t Dave’s real name James?” James had lived next door to us until about a year ago when he’d moved.
We were able to tell the police officers where he now lived. They went there and, sure enough, found him lying on the floor. He was taken to hospital. The apple watched had alerted the police to what was a serious situation, which was brilliant. James hadn’t updated his ICE details when he’d moved.
