3 months validity on passport - where can you go?

Wise world of MN, does anyone know if there is a way to see which countries you can travel to with a UK passport that expires in about 3 months from time of travel without looking each country up manually?

DH has stupidly not realised his passport expires 3 months after the AL we have coordinated off together. We got married during the pandemic, no honeymoon or holiday for years. Looking to go further afield than Europe. Any suggestions or know where I can find a list of countries that are potential options? Thanks.

I’m pretty sure Europe only and you need to have three months left from the date of the return journey, but happy to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable!

fitflopqueen · 27/03/2023 22:30

Barbados?

CatOnTheChair · 27/03/2023 22:32

Other bit to check is how long he has had the passport.
Immigration have started becoming a bit funny about passports more than 10 years old.

dementedpixie · 27/03/2023 22:36

Think USA only needs it valid for duration of your visit

dementedpixie · 27/03/2023 22:37

Or can he not just renew his passport?

Abouttimemum · 27/03/2023 22:38

Yeah USA, just needs to be valid for the duration of your trip

Not since we've left the EU

Thank you. Anyone know if there are any airline restrictions - which airlines are ok with having only 3 months validity?

OP posts:
SeasonsBleatings · 28/03/2023 19:23

I think airlines need to adhere to the policy of the country you're flying to don't they?

Theraffarian · 28/03/2023 19:27

As someone else has mentioned , any extra months added on top of the 10 years past issue date were also invalidated, so best to check that too.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 28/03/2023 19:27

Also check as it’s the anniversary of the start date not from the end date, so if his passport was renewed and they added extra time on and was common you could have less than 3 months. It meant I ‘list’ the 6 months grace that was added to mine as it was issued in January, ended in July but meant I had to have 3 months left before January on return from France in October - was v v close. I’d been thinking it was July -3 mins instead

Just to clarify on the rules for Europe - if visiting countries in the Schengen region, you only need 3 months left so long as your passport was issued within the last 10 years. This includes the Canary Islands as they are part of Spain

When do I need to renew my passport for travel to Europe?

Everything you need to know about the expiry rules post-Brexit

Thanks everyone. I'm finding this all a bit confusing though - how / where can I check for definite?

For example, I think Japan, Seychelles, Maldives and St Lucia are options as they just need validity for the duration of stay (Maldives needs 1 month extra). His passport was issued in May 2013 and expires August 23. We are planning to travel end of April. Yes it is all a bit last minute but would this be possible?

Maldives for example says
"Passport validityIf entering Maldives as a tourist, you will be granted a 30-day visa upon arrival and your passport must be valid for a minimum of one month. However, if arriving by air, most airlines state that your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into the Maldives. Check with your transport provider or tour operator before travelling. You should ensure your passport has no damage or you may be stopped by Immigration, who examine passports carefully."
Do I need to call up each individual airline before booking something?

Mexico is fine too.

polka6 · 28/03/2023 20:10

Does anyone know what the rules are for transiting airports? I doubt any of those I mentioned above can be travelled to directly so we will need to have a lay over somewhere. Whats the rules for this?

Mauritius maybe

bumpertobumper · 29/03/2023 14:25

A new passport takes about a week - an emergency appointment you can get one same day. You have three weeks before going - why isn't he just getting a new passport?

allgrownupnow · 29/03/2023 14:26

Especially as some countries/airlines will be seeing it as expiring in May- when are you planning on returning?

GMOOH2023 · 29/03/2023 15:18

His passport was issued in May 2013

Then it expires in May 2023.

As other people have pointed out upthread, the 10 year validity starts from the date the passport is issued. You can no longer have extra months added on if you renew early.

His passport will count as expired from May.

The 10 year rule applies to travel within Europe and would not affect travel to other countries outside Europe. It is a feature of brexit!

GMOOH2023 · 29/03/2023 15:24

@dementedpixie

Sorry, yes, I was talking about Europe - but forgot to add that bit!

dementedpixie · 29/03/2023 15:27

OP said they wanted to go further afield than Europe so I assume they are aware of the EU passport rules.

  • under 10 years old on date of departure (look at issue date)
  • have 3 months remaining on the date you leave the EU (look at the expiry date)
