Someone reversed into my car in a car park then drove off.

I had just finished my shopping on Sunday and was reversing out of a parking space. I have a rear camera and it was absolutely clear. I suddenly became aware that another vehicle opposite and to the left had begun reversing at speed. It also became clear that they hadn't seen me so I stopped my car and was attempting to pull forwards but I didn't have time before I was hit. As I got out of my car, the other driver also got out and started shouted aggressively saying it was knock for knock. I responded saying it absolutely wasn't and I'd like her details. She refused to give them and got in the car and drove off but I managed to take a picture of the car.

I am absolutely clear that I was not at fault and the store CCTV will show this. There were witnesses who said she practically ran to her car, didn't even look where she was going and I had begun my manoeuvre before she'd got into the car. They have provided their contact details and have said they would be happy to help if needed.

There is some minor damage to my car where the paint has chipped off (she hit the rear edge) but it will still need to be repaired. I have reported to police online as she refused to give details. Will anyone even look at this? I don't want to be £500 out of pocket for repairs to my car for something someone else has done. I checked online and the others vehicle is apparently insured.

Can I do anything else?

Claim on your insurance; it should be a no fault claim and they will be able to recover the costs from her insurer.

SleepingisanArt · 27/03/2023 13:59

Have you reported it to your insurance company? If you have her registration they'll be able to track her down and claim against her insurance.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 27/03/2023 14:04

All else you need to do is report to your insurer and give them all of the information, including those of the witnesses.

I very much doubt the store will give you the CCTV directly if you ask for it, but you can ask them to save it for the insurer/Police, but I would be genuinely pleasantly surprised if the Police were overly interested as no one was injured.

In my lengthy experience as an insurance claims investigator, the police will likely just refer it to your insurer, even if the other driver didn't give you her details. Your insurer may try to get the CCTV from the store, but again, for the value of the claim, I wouldn't hold my breath I am afraid.

wincywincyspider · 27/03/2023 14:07

Claim on your insurance, they'll will track her down and sort this out. Especially at the time you were stationary so should be an easy "no fault" claim for you.

wincywincyspider · 27/03/2023 14:07

They will*

SourPuss1968 · 27/03/2023 14:32

Why does it need to be repaired? I'd just leave it

MsWhitworth · 27/03/2023 14:35

Phone your insurance company, tell them what happened. They’ll sort out the repair and the liability and deal with it all. That’s what you pay them for.

Why should the OP drive around in a car with damage due to someone else’s incompetence and shirty attitude?

To the OP, use askMID to find their insurer (it’ll cost £3 or so) then go directly to them. This avoids having to pay your excess until it’s recovered, and they'll be keen to handle the case directly as it reduces cost.

It’s shit that people like this exist, but I’ve had it first hand myself twice now - both times resolved in my favour.

OnNaturesCourse · 27/03/2023 14:36

Happened to me.

Police took the picture I had, and statements. My insurance took the details too and through the registration plate number were able to find out the car was insured.

But I had no CCTV coverage. So I couldn't prove what happened.

Ended up being a "no fault" claim on my own insurance. But due to circumstances it didn't effect my no claims etc.

Even if it didn't need to be repaired, why should it be? OP report to your insurance and let them handle it. Hopefully with the evidence, it goes against her. It'll teach her to give her details next time.

Nailsandthesea · 27/03/2023 14:47

Have you reported it to the police and her failure to provide her name, address and insurance

report to your insurance

When/ if OP decides to sell the car, any potential buyers will point out the damage and want a discount.

Lastofyou · 27/03/2023 15:00

Some really useful advice thank you. I'll report to my insurance. The store wouldn't release footage to me but have said that they will provide it to insurance/police.

It's not a given that the police won't be interested. A while ago, I saw a man reverse into a parked car at ridiculous speed and he drove off, leaving significant damage behind. I gave both registration numbers to 101 and someone from the local police station phoned me a couple of days later to check some details, so it was being looked into.

Some of us understand paint chips will lead to corrosion which will be a much bigger problem. Not sure why you wouldn’t get it fixed tbh. Laziness?

We drive a old car that already has loads of scratches and dents and one more wouldn't really both us really. People are way too worried about "keeping up with the Jones'es" by having posh cars

Ours is a relatively new car. Nothing to do with keeping up with the Jones' and everything to do with needing a reliable vehicle to commute. I'd rather my car didn't rust.

Rust isnt stopping are car from being reliable!

Rust will stop a car from being reliable when it fails an MOT due to corrosion.

It's great that you drive a shed. Genuinely thrilled for you. But some of us take some pride in our vehicles, whatever the age of them. Nothing to do with 'keeping up with the Jones's.

I bet you could find fault with talking to yourself in the mirror. You have very low standards which the OP doesn't hold to.

I dont even know what your getting at. If I had an argument with myself I know who'd win

Rollercoaster1920 · 27/03/2023 16:41

Well done for getting witnesses. That is the crucial thing in any insurance claim in my experience.

OnNaturesCourse · 27/03/2023 17:50

@SourPuss1968

Are you okay? You seem angry at the world and looking for a argument.

OP - I agree, it needs fixed. Even when my old "run around" car got a bump I fixed it as 1. I took pride in it and 2. It leads to rust... 3. I'd hope others would treat it with more respect if I did.

custardbear · 27/03/2023 17:55

Yes, report everything. If it's worth it they can get an expert to decide who is in the wrong
Good luck
