Cheddar Gorge on crutches

Has anyone been to Cheddar Gorge, or Wookey Hole, and been on crutches.

I'm due to go soon, but am on crutches. DH wants me to try to stop using crutches before we go, but at the moment and I'm in agony and unsteady (had an ankle fusion 4 months ago, and the pain has increased in the last couple of weeks).

I'm sure that I will be able to access it. If not would wearing an Aircast boot be better (I can manage with one crutch if wearing one I think).

Definite no. Both sets of caves are scrambly, uneven, dark, damp. Also once you're in, you're in. There's no shortcut way out again.
healing Is not a linear process. I chipped my ankle bone a few years back which was nowhere near as major as an op and it was a good year before it was actually reliable and pain-free all the time.

Tell him to Google Ankle fusion surgery. The X-ray image of my daughters ankle and foot looks like a Roman Gladiator sandal designed by Screwfix.

No to going in the caves at both Wookey and cheddar. Very unsafe with crutches. I think you manage the village at cheddar. No village at Wookey.

Well, that'll come as a surprise to those that live in the village.

lol if you still have a post office on the high street you definitely count as at least a village by UK standards lol!

"The village of Wookey Hole is dominated by the Wookey Hole Caves tourist site which has show caves and a controversial crazy golf course which was built on the site of the village bowling green.[4] The village has shops, a pub, restaurants, hotels and a campsite. The Grade II listed Church of St Mary Magdalene dates to 1873-74.[5]"

"The 18th-century Bubwith farmhouse is also a Grade II listed building,[8] as is the post office in the High Street.[9]"

That Wikipedia page is very out of date, it still says Gerry Cottle is the owner and he died 2 years ago of covid! There's no post office in Wookey Hole any more, although the old building may well be listed.

@Akite perfectly fair points it's a lot more than two years ago that I was there.

You husband is correct, you need to he off crutches before trying to walk around Chedder Gorge. But TBH you sound more like you'd rather get in a few digs about him.

Jesus. What a shit thing to say

No sorry

stupidsocialmedia · 12/04/2023 19:36

I thought I'd come back and update.

I did it today! On crutches.

We found somewhere to park near Cox's Cave and I was fine on the pavement. DH carried one crutch and I used one and held on to the handrail.

There was another woman on crutches there too today.

Did both caves and the museum, but got utterly drenched by a never-ending hailstorm.

Foot and ankle hurts now, but so worth it and pleased I did.

Now sitting in a static caravan that is shaking so much the glasses in the cupboard are rattling.

I also think I didn't understand the layout when I originally posted, the gorge would've been impossible (but a lovely drive).

Not the question you asked, because everyone has told you it would be a daft idea.

I'm concerned that you are saying the pain is increasing. Because I've had that surgery and it really shouldn't be. Have you discussed it with your consultant?

Feuillemille23 · 12/04/2023 19:55

Given how steep and uneven and downright slippery both sets of caves can get, quite without thinking about climbing up the Gorge itself, I'm slightly mystified as to why you didn't head to somewhere else nearby, like Weston super Mare with its long, flat seafront, say, though I'm glad you managed it. Hope you have good painkillers/ ice to hand by just in case of more flare ups - agree you might want to get your consultant to double check it when you're home.

stupidsocialmedia · 12/04/2023 20:08

@Quveas I'm seeing the consultant on Monday. I have a lump that's appeared at the side, which the physiotherapist contacted the surgeon about.
