Broken wrist!

Hi all,
DD broke her wrist and was given a splint to wear - I have a telephone appointment tomorrow. Do they normally put a cast on it or will she just keep the splint?
any advice very gratefully recieved!

Depends on the break .
Sometimes casts are not put on till the swelling has gone down.

Keep on top on the pain killers .
IE ....if you are at the 4 hour mark for another dose .....still give it to your dd even if she says no pain .

If you wait for pain it will still take time for it to kick in.

Though that was for my adult break .
I don't know what children's breaks are like .

I had a cast both times. I was also very lucky in that both breaks weren’t very painful so didn’t need painkillers. Fingers crossed your dd is not in too much pain.
If she is given a cast then I can fully recommend a Limbo for the shower.

I had a broken wrist earlier this year. A clean break and I was given a splint to wear at minor injuries. My X-ray was sent to orthopaedics for a check and they would get in contact if it needed upgraded to a cast. I never heard anything so stuck with the splint, carefully did the exercises I was given, and after 4 weeks started taking the splint off most of the time. Back to (gently) punching pads at karate 5 weeks after the break.

Can I ask what happened in the end? My child has a complete break of ulna and buckle fracture of radius. They are currently in a cast and I had a telephone appointment today and was told next week after 1 week in the cast she can switch to a splint. I am a bit surprised as urgent care told us she would be in a cast for many weeks!

It's likely you should've been given a discharge information leaflet on discharge. Scroll down to the links at the end and choose buckle fracture, even if it's a different (simple/undisplaced) fracture the information should be relevant.

Thanks.

I haven’t been given any written information at all and have no opportunity to ask further questions. I was told the person who will remove the cast and fit the splint will not be able to answer my questions and it was hard to think of questions on the phone, I was just so surprised just 1 week in the cast having been told 13 prior to that.

I’m guessing they are just treating it as if it is just a buckle fracture in her radius and not worried about the complete fracture of the ulna?

Hiya,
very similar - a complete fracture of the radius and a buckle of the ulna in her left wrist. However my DD also fractured her right wrist at the same time. So they put splints on at A and E and then had a phone appointment where they said keep the splints on full time for 4 weeks, then gently wean them off. It was around 10 weeks before she wasn’t using them at all.
they said plaster on both wrists would be too much and they feel that he wrists will heal sufficiently with the splints
