Where to go on a family holiday for approx. £3k in August?

All ideas welcome, but would be great to get some all-inclusive options if possible.

Family of 4 and it has to be in August.

Have you been anywhere for that kind of budget that you'd recommend? Or is there anywhere you have your eye on?

Thanks :)

(This is partly inspired by another thread, but I genuinely would like to know for my own family!)

How old are the kids?

When mine we little we went to majorca and menorca a lot. Menorca esp is a beautiful island, lots of beaches and coves to explore, amazing weather, nice hotels, but only a 2.5 hour flight that was easy to manage for them.

Now they are bit older, we love lanzarote which is our go to beach holiday, but we had a lovely holiday on cyprus too.

I looked at your brief for days & days, I was looking for 10 days all inclusive in August, to be honest all of the options were a bit rubbish so we've booked Eurocamp in Spain instead!

Full Board (which is I think not the same as all inclusive) is showing at about £1.5k for Sands Beach in Lanzarote for a week in August - not a massively swish resort but does a decent job. Depending on how much flights would be for you, that could work.

This is for two separate families holidays.

I've never taken the DC away out of the country. We've had lots of lovely holidays with family and friends in the UK - e.g. camping, self catering cottages in big groups so the prices are shared, visiting family etc etc.

But, this year I finally started earning enough again to be able to think about a holiday abroad. (Been part time for years).

My DC are 10 and 14.

I also hope it'll be useful for another MNer who basically has the same question, but because she started her thread talking about how much she spend for a holiday in the Lakes it kinda derailed the thread!

Her DC are 5 and 2, and she also comes with a DP.

So suggestions that fit either of those groups would be grand.

Also, as I've literally never done a traditional family holiday abroad, any basic tips would be very welcome.

I've also never done an all inclusive holiday for myself.

Pre-DC I preferred self catering holidays away from overly touristy areas, or travels where we kept on the move but those more adventurous days are in the past now!

With DC in tow, I can the appeal of all inclusive or half-board, and access to facilities for DC. But I'm open to ideas!

With the 10 and 14 year old. I'd look balaerics or canaries. Go on the sites and filter places with onsite water parks and entertainment.

I take my kids of similar ages alone. It was scary the first few times but we made it fine, and have the best time. Even in not the best hotels as I'm not well off, I always book a full package with transfers etc, but we have an amazing time. With onsite water parks pools and entertainment the kids go off and enjoy themselves and I can lay by a pool and relax. We will arrange a couple of excursion days out before we go so we have a lose plan for the week. A day out in a local town mooching and shopping. Evenings we spend together at cheesy entertainment then play card games on the terrace.

The food isn't always amazing, some places are better than others, but there's always something everyone likes, and we will go out to eat a couple of times too.

But the memories and time with the kids is amazing. Now they are older/teens I enjoy our holidays so much more as I get time to relax whilst there things they can go off and do by themselves. I think the holidays bring us all closer too, and we still talk about all of them years later. (more so than we do about the big American mouse theme park holiday we went on with extended family)

I hope you have a great time where ever you decide.

Is eurocamp one of those places with tents already put up for you, and they're basically like little apartments with kitchens with actual cupboards etc?

I visited my mate who was staying at one of them, once, while my then-BF and I were touring France on a motorbike. Looked great for DC.

That sounds lovely. DD is very keen to play card games and board games and we rarely find time at home. Both would be in their element with a water park on hand, too.

I'm not a sitting by the pool relaxing type person, my mind is too busy (with nonsense!!), it just won't let me sadly!!

But I would love a chance to just chill and read some books. Never get time to read these days, my to-read pile is just gathering dust.

The Greek Islands are lovely (Crete and Kos both v. successful) and should come in budget. Last week of August tends to be slightly cheaper.

milafawny · 26/03/2023 21:23

@gwrachod

That's exactly what I do. I can't sit by a pool with nothing to do either. Last time I took 2 books with my and finished them 4 days in and had to go shopping for another. Absolute bliss

MathsNervous · 26/03/2023 21:25

Benidorm for the water park.

bumblefeline · 26/03/2023 21:27

Hotel El Paso Portaventura. Coming in just over 3k on jet2 for August all inclusive depends where you flying from. Unlimited access to the theme park. Short transfer time.

gwrachod · 26/03/2023 21:35

Wow, there's a huge difference between Easter and August, price-wise! Perhaps I should consider Easter also.

Perhaps it's not all properly open out of season?

Cyprus or possibly turkey. Neither I of my dp like spending the whole time by a pool, we like to be able to go see and do. Cyprus has some fantastic historical sites, as well as the usual child friendly waterparks and amusements. There are some outstanding beaches as well nissi beach( despite its local name) is an amazing beach for kids , a vast expanse of beautiful relatively shallow crystal clear water to swim in. Turkey is the same, we stayed in the Side area, not quite as 'touristy' as marMaris, and as Cyprus lots to see and do. Turkey tends to cheaper than the Spanish islands, and Cyprus can definitely be pricy, but you should easily get something for £3k in turkey.

I went to Kefalonia before, it was stunning! And Crete as a child which I know I loved as a child, but I don't remember much.

A Greek island holiday does sound absolutely lovely. I think the beach I love the most that I've ever visited was in Kefalonia.

What would be ideal, would be somewhere we could do a couple of cultural excursions also. Both DP and DS are very into visiting historical sites (DD and I enjoy it too).

We're going to South of France and it's cost about that much with flights, accommodation and rental car - I booked flights for late August just over a month ago and with Ryanair they were actually still pretty cheap. Booked mid-price but spacious airbnb for 10 days with decent kitchen/dining area and garden as eating out every meal would be super pricey (family of 4, kids will be 12 and 15) and we want to be able to eat in but have nice surroundings.

PoppityBoo · 26/03/2023 22:28

As a bit of an off the wall suggestion, we’ve just booked a weeks cruise with P&O round the Norwegian fjords for August. Basically all inclusive and cost £3.2k all in (bar any excursions we will do off ship). Kids slightly younger than yours but we aren’t really sit round the pool kind of people and I was worried about the heat in Greece in August would be unbearable. Am nervous and excited in equal measure!
