Cleaning black mould off bathroom ceiling

TheBeautifulLisette · 26/03/2023 10:33

The ceiling has some mould spots. I’ve found info online that says I can clean it off with a bleach solution. Have you ever done this and does it work?

I’m prepared to put time and effort in but I want to get it right the first time. There are so many conflicting suggestions online. Please tell me what worked for you!

HG mould remover spray. Take a big breath, spray it on and vacate the bathroom with the window open and door shut for a couple of hours if possible. It's the only thing that works for us

This stuff is the best.

I have tried this but it just keeps coming back

Movinghouseatlast · 26/03/2023 10:35

You can use a ready made solution like Mould and Mildew Remover.

Vinegar in a spray bottle also works. Leave it on for 30 minutes then wipe off.

Xrays · 26/03/2023 10:35

A mould spray is good if it’s just a few odd spots but if it keep happening you’ll need to increase the ventilation - a dehumidifier and / or better fan in the bathroom.

BrutusMcDogface · 26/03/2023 10:36

I have this problem and in the Easter holidays, I plan to clean it with HG and then use mould blocking paint to repaint the ceiling and walls in the hope it doesn’t return!

fyn · 26/03/2023 10:36

@Onemyownhere it will keep coming back unless you treat the root cause of the mould. Mould I’m bathrooms is almost always as a result of poor ventilation and cold temperatures.

I always have my window open in the bathroom, the window has a vent which is always open on it and because its private renting the landord company comes and uses special paint to paint over it.. Still keeps coming back

TheBeautifulLisette · 26/03/2023 10:42

You guys are the best. Thank you so much.

Yes, the mould is going to keep coming back unfortunately. It’s a very poorly ventilated room (no windows and no extractor fan). I don’t know why the problem has only just started now (after 15 years) but I suspect the cooler temps in the house this winter due to the energy crisis are to blame.

I’ll pick up some HG tomorrow and set to work.

Cillit bang mould spray is genuinely amazing.

NeedWineNow · 26/03/2023 11:30

We've got this and likewise only started this year. Our bathroom is downstairs built into what used to the the old outbuilding (we live in a Victorian cottage). We've got an extractor fan with an overhead Velux window as it has a pitched roof but we can't open the window in bad weather as all the rain comes in so it isn't well ventilated. As it is a pitched ceiling it is really difficult to clean at the best of times.

I used Astonish Mould & Mildew Blaster. Sprayed it onto a mop and then wiped over the ceiling with it. Came up a treat. Did smell a bit of bleach though but that went off after a couple of days.

We need to have our bathroom refitted so we're thinking of having most of it tiled and then the ceiling levelled off with a better extractor and a light tube so it makes it easier to clean. Waiting to see what the builder suggests.

MarissaG · 26/03/2023 11:41

@TheBeautifulLisette I use this kind of thing to wipe the HG spray over the ceiling rather than just spraying it (and myself and the rest of the bathroom) as it has bleach in it.

It's going to get a messy whilst leaving the product (likely bleach based) to work with it dripping down the walls and onto the floor but it's certainly winnable with a bit of graft.

SBHon · 26/03/2023 11:56

I cleaned with Astonish and then painted over mine with stain block paint and it’s not come back yet!

I really think it’s the repainting with stain block that’s made the difference but it’s purely anecdotal of course.

SwedishEdith · 26/03/2023 11:57

The mould remover sprays are just diluted bleach and won't sort the problem. I spent last Easter holidays tackling this after years of using the sprays. The paint was starting to peel anyway so needed to be done.

You need a mould killer - an actual fungicide. You'll get them in B&Q. I found by wetting the ceiling with it, the paint started to peel off anyway so I was able to lift off the mouldy paint. I used the paint killer a few times to be sure. Then I prepped the ceiling (mist paint on bare patches, sanded etc) and used a mould resistant paint. Annoyingly. it says you can't paint over it so need to choose from the colour range available. However, Valspar claim the premium paint is mould resistant and I used that on the walls. Anyway, even despite it being the coldest room in the house (north east aspect) with a not very powerful towel radiator and heating not on as much as usual anyway because... there has been no mould on the ceiling for a year.

Windows open for every shower as well.

Yes, this is what we use. Just spray and wipe with a cloth.

Always lived in an old draughty damp house so it’s just a regular winter job.

fyn · 26/03/2023 20:23

@NeedWineNow a positive input ventilation system is the best thing for it, cost a few thousand to install though!

SapatSea · 26/03/2023 20:46

Use a mould remover and be very careful you don't get it on you or in your eyes - I wear goggles and a breathing mask if I have to do a ceiling. Let it dry and wipe off or sandpaper any peeling paint.

Buy an anti mould paint additive ( Brewers keep it, readily available online) and can deal with 98% humidity. Add this to to whatever paint colour you choose. It works for at least a few years ( up to 5) .

Think about having a fan installed or using a dehumidifier in the bathroom. Make sure no one is spraying the ceiling with the shower! we had a bathroom like yours in our last house and my teens had incredibly long showers, it was like the rain forest.

Honestly, I was gobsmacked by it! I have teeny mosaic tiles bordering the bathroom with a feature bit about 6 wide, which was looking manky. Used Cillit Bang and they were sparkling. God knows what’s in it! 😱

I had mould on my bathroom ceiling and this got it off https://www.savers.co.uk/Household/Cleaning-Products/Bathroom-Cleaner/Dettol-Mould-And-Mildew-Spray-750ML/p/773488?gclid=Cj0KCQjw2v-gBhC1ARIsAOQdKY2y3nxTZDmLRU8DyLDe4PKhHv5f7ZNc-L5f8PkFpecwaFPU1diaiXAaAs7GEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

It is really smelly and you need to leave it on for a bit with the windows open then wipe it down. But it does work and I'd recommend it.

I'm also more careful now to ventilate the bathroom properly.

So, funny story, last summer I battled this relentless black mould on my bathroom ceiling, and let me tell you, it was a whole saga! I stumbled upon this amazing trick – a DIY bleach solution. Worked like a charm! Just mix it up, apply, and watch the magic happen. I'm in Houston, TX, and with the humidity here, mould's practically a roommate. So, the secret sauce? I sprayed the solution, left it for a bit, and then scrubbed away. Voila! No more mould party. Oh, and quick shoutout to mold removal houston – they're pros if you ever need the big guns. Anyway, happy mould-busting!
