Anybody go by a different name sometimes?

I'm a man type person who works in a nursery. There's a lovely and rather scatty Mum who calls me John all the time. It's not my name. I couldn't figure out how to correct her in a polite way that wouldn't make her feel embarrassed, so I didn't. I'm now John whenever I see her.

Anybody else in a similar situation?

I work at reception in a mental health unit.

So many of the middle eastern patients have more than one set of names. It gets really hard when they order food in. So the name on the order is Mohammed X. Silly me for not realising he is Ibrahim Y!!

One patient came down to see what was taking his order so long. The name he gave to order wasn't his real name or any 'other' name. It was his Facebook name. Duh! fancy me not realising that.

Just lately we have had a spate of young to middle aged women who have several names!

Only in Starbucks.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/03/2023 08:38

We’ll be moving g to a different country when we retire. Considering adopting my maiden name as it’s local.

Girasoli · 26/03/2023 08:56

My DM gives a similar sounding to her real name English name to taxis and Starbucks as its easier to pronounce.

Anewuser · 26/03/2023 09:00

A school mum always calls me Alison, I’ve never corrected so I’ve been that for 10 years now.

We have carers that go by totally different names.

Many years ago I worked briefly in an HR department and was surprised at how many people used their middle name as their first name.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 26/03/2023 09:06

Both of my names are fairly long with choices of short versions & I used a lot of them when I was younger.

It did get a bit confusing occasionally if I was with 2 people who knew me by different names.

IHeartGeneHunt · 26/03/2023 12:15

I use my middle name at work.

BigFishontheTelly · 22/04/2023 10:58

I had this at my old work, where the caretaker was mistaken about my name and I left it to long to correct it.

Then his wife joined the organisation and said to him "Why on Earth are you calling Rachel, Vicky?" So that sorted it out!!

DorisParchment · 22/04/2023 11:11

My Gran used to call me Sandra. My great gran used to call me Christina. My name is neither of these.

redavocado · 22/04/2023 11:20

An ex used to use a different last name for taxis, restaurants, etc. He had a long, complicated Italian occupational last name and used the English equivalent.

13Bastards · 22/04/2023 11:56

A friend with a Sikh name uses Hannah Jones for Starbucks etc, it's just easier she says

romdowa · 22/04/2023 11:59

A woman I grew up next to , she was 3 doors down. Has called me Michelle for 30 years 🤣🤣 so I just answer to it now.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 22/04/2023 12:00

What do you mean by 'man type person'?

What do you mean by 'man type person'?

I was wondering that.

2chocolateoranges · 22/04/2023 12:07

,I worked in a pub and one older man called me Gwen, I did correct him when I first started but he insisted on calling me Gwen so I went along with it, I answered to it for about 6 years until someone told him my name wasn’t Gwen! 😂

What do you mean by 'man type person'?

You get all types of persons. I'm a person of the man persuasion. You can also get lady persons and lollipop persons and many many others.

I understand. You're a person of the 'I like to use whimsical expressions' persuasion.

lidlbrownjug · 22/04/2023 13:01

So you're just a man then?

Why is that relevant at all?

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/04/2023 13:02

Years back one of the women who lived in my ex’s apartment block got it into her head that his name was Liam and I was Becky. Our names are very much not Liam and Becky, but he didn’t correct her the first couple of times she did it, so we just went along with it and assumed the roles of Liam and Becky. I remember at Christmas, angsting over how we were going to sign off our Christmas card: we went with Liam and Becky. To top it off, we went to the local community fundraiser and saw her there, where she proceeded to introduce us to several other people who lived in the block as Liam and Becky, too.

lidlbrownjug · 22/04/2023 13:01

So you're just a man then?

Why is that relevant at all?

Because there's a big difference between the person mistakenly calling a man John and them calling a woman John.

lidlbrownjug · 22/04/2023 13:06

So why not say "I'm a bloke and ..."?

Mysterian · 22/04/2023 13:07

That's just what they'd be expecting...

KnittingNeedles · 22/04/2023 13:07

I have a fairly unusual name. In Starbucks, I’m Kate. Because everyone can spell Kate.

lidlbrownjug · 22/04/2023 13:08

Why the "I'm a man type person"?

Your "there's lollipop people" doesn't equate because we would still need to know the sex of the lollipop person in your example.
