Help! Raider cat sprayed pee and we have a house viewing tomorrow!

We have a docile female cat who is being terrorised by a male cat. This Viking raider managed to break through the cat flap last night (cat flap being sorted - that's not the problem) and has sprayed pee in what smells like every room in the house that had a door open. The smell woke me up, it's that bad.

I've read up on using vinegar, bicarb and enzyme cleaner (guess you dilute the bicarb and spray it on?) but does any of this genuinely work on strong male cat pee, especially if you can't pinpoint exactly where they've sprayed?

Our house went on the market yesterday and we have a viewing today - such crappy timing!

Is there anything anyone has used themselves to eliminate the eye-watering stench that actually works?

Try biological washing powder. But you really need to find where he sprayed (check walls).
I feel for you, my stud started to piss on a carpet, I keep treating it with enzyme cleaners with no results.

Oh god I'd be fuming !!

Thanks, yes, have just read been reading up on biological washing liquid/powder, followed by white spirit, as a solution.

Sitting here typing this with a headache from the eye-watering stench and not looking forward to sniffing out all the locations (walls, doors, shoe rack, side of sofa) where I think he's sprayed.

I just hope my house viewers have no sense of smell!

Only biological washing powder/liquids, if you use anything else a) it wont work b) it will result in the cat rescenting the area because it encourages the enzymes to be stronger (or something like that, not sure of the exact science)

TrianglePlayer · 26/03/2023 08:21

We had almost the exact same thing last night. Woken up to a commotion of dogs going mental and a random cat had got in. Thankfully it could only get into one room as door was closed but it stinks and I can’t actually see any trace of where it is. I really feel for you with the viewings, what a nightmare (viewings on a Sunday? We never have those here…).

Crumbcatcher · 26/03/2023 08:23

There's a pet Zoflora called fresh home, it is an enzymatic deodoriser as well as disinfectant. Good luck!

CutesyUserName · 26/03/2023 08:28

@TrianglePlayer Yes, viewing today. Went on the market on Friday night, had a viewing yesterday (pre-cat pee problem) and we're showing others around ourselves today.

Another vote for biological washing liquid, also see if you can buy a Blacklight to detect where the cat peed. You might not be able to buy one in the shops before viewing today but you should be able to get one delivered for future viewings.

I’d be tempted to cancel the viewings today myself. A house smelling of tomcat would not make a good impression.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/03/2023 08:43

Get a black light torch, it'll show you where the cat has sprayed as it's not always obvious. And whatever you do, do not, I repeat do not use it on your bedsheets.

CutesyUserName · 26/03/2023 08:44

I can't cancel the viewing unfortunately as I don't have contact details for them and the estate agent is closed.

I've looked into the black light on Amazon as it seems to be mentioned a lot, but lots of people state it actually doesn't show up pee very well if at all, so not sure it will help.

Look in cupboards. Clothes. Bags. Even laces you thought inaccessible. You’ll go nose blind as well. You’ll smell it everywhere even in the car. Your viewers will smell it. No matter what you do today. Be honest with them.

Theunamedcat · 26/03/2023 08:48

It might not be every room it might just smell like it

Check areas your cats scent is strongest where she eats and sleeps?

Scrub with bio wash solution there is a spray called simple solution which is meant to work (from pets at home and amazon)

CutesyUserName · 26/03/2023 08:52

@Theunamedcat Yes, I'm pretty sure it's restricted to downstairs at least, which is something.

I'd already ordered some Simple Solution which should arrive tomorrow. I'll use it once I've done the bio wash scrub down.

do you have a pet supply shop nearbythat is open on sunday?

enzyme cleaner is very effective.

orcheck the nearesf supermarket or diy store websites if they stock it.

open the windows to air out as much as possible.
light candles.(don't need to be scented).
warm up garlic bread just before viewing.

I feel for you. we didn't put in an offer on an otherwise perfect house because of the strong pet smell.

CutesyUserName · 26/03/2023 18:48

UPDATE: We used diluted bio liquid sprayed liberally everywhere where we thought the cat might have sprayed, and some places we could actually pinpoint. The little sod had actually got upstairs into one of the bedrooms, too :(

I had to machine wash a very expensive tapestry door curtain as it had sprayed on that and it smells fine as it's drying, so fingers crossed.

I followed all this up with spraying of surgical spirit/rubbing alcohol.

For now at least, it's made a huge difference. House now smells of fresh laundry with a faint smell of cat pee in the background. I might have to repeat it all tomorrow when it's all sat for 24 hours and doors and windows have been shut overnight, but at least I'm hopeful.

Oh, and my viewers were a no show, which I didn't know whether to be angry about or grateful for! Both I think.

I had a visitor who did this ( thanks, resident cat for your support, not) I used some vinegar in warm water to wipe down the areas and it seemed to get rid of it and didn’t smell vinegary either.
