A Florida head teacher has resigned following complaints from parents that their children were exposed to pornography during a lesson where they were shown a picture of Michelangelo's David.

Is the statue pornographic?

I've just read some of those stories on the Safe Schools alliance page and while some concerns are valid, others are just pearl clutching. What's wrong with talking about masturbation and sex toys? At age 11-12, quite a few boys will be having wet dreams - should that be shut down too?

Maybe it's because I had sex education in the Netherlands where there's a lot less prudery, but I have no time for this movement.

Thanks for extra info, @Teddeh

Separate topic:

Why does David lack pubic hair?

For that matter, medieval portraits of people, Christ on the cross, Adam reaching out to creator... also no hair under arms. Very occasionally, in some portrait or Bacchus or debauchery, you see pubes/under arm hair. To emphasise how barbaric, wild, uncivilised the character is, I guess.

I am so intrigued by epilating habits of the past ! Obviously goes back a long long way.

I’ve come to see the term ‘pearl clutching’ on here as a posters way of shutting down conversations.

This is not a ‘movement’ but a reaction coming from ordinary parents who know their own children.

The Netherlands oddly have high rates of porn based on children being abused. There is nothing necessarily so impressive about the mental health around sex in the Netherlands.

Press reports in 2008 described a large rise in the number of child pornography websites hosted in the Netherlands, increasing from 100 reports of sites in 2006 to 700 in 2007.[11]
In 2020 the European Commissionreported that in 2019 The Netherlands hosted 71% of the child sexual abuse material detected in Europe by the Internet Watch Foundation, an increase from 47% in 2018.[12]

@ScrollingLeaves the Netherlands has legal loopholes which allow for the hosting of porn. This is a bad thing. The Netherlands are also a tax haven, which is a bad thing. Both these things are about people making money. But neither of those things are in the slightest bit related to sex education, which in the Netherlands is excellent. It's disingenuous of you to link these things and cast moral aspersions on Dutch culture.

Fact is, too many of those stories on the site you linked to are about parents who think that 11/12 year olds should not learn about masturbation or sexual pleasure - despite the fact that they may already be experiencing those things and worrying about it. Talking about masturbation in a sensible way at that age should not be a safeguarding issue.

Anyone teaching that intersex conditions are a gender issue doesn't understand biology, but there is nothing wrong with mentioning gender identities. If it isn't discussed in class, students are going to get it online. The current utterly polarised debate about trans rights/trans identities helps no-one. GC people are just as responsible for the screaming as TRAs.

David was supposed to only be a 'youth', and Michaelangelo's version isn't totally hairless.
