Giving notice at work

About to hand in my notice of resignation at work. I have to give 3 calendar months.

If I hand in on Friday 31st March will that mean my last contracted day is 30th June?

Or if I hand in on Monday 3rd April will my last contracted day be Monday 3rd July?

Hoping to start new job on Monday 3rd July…

So you need to resign on Friday (March 31).

Friday 31 is pay day so feels a bit awkward basically waiting for cash to come in then putting notice in! But I think you’re right…

You don’t have to wait until the 31st. Just resign now and state your last working day as the day before you want to start.

I've always resigned on the last day of the month to make it easier from a pay perspective. I don't think anyone will think there's anything unusual about it, it's pretty standard behaviour.

You're overthinking that one 😀 There is nothing wrong in resigning on payday.

Why, do you not earn your money? Have you not put the hours in for your pay? Are they giving you the money for nothing? 😂(If so, stay!)

Did they give you the job out of the goodness of their hearts and not because you're a decent employee and do what they need you to do?

I have felt very grateful to good employers in the past and some jobs have been so good for me, but at the end of the day, it's not personal, you need to do what's best for yourself and that cuts both ways - an employer is going to cut hours or downsize when they need to too. Payday is just another day, and it might even be easier in terms of working out final pay etc so guilt is misplaced.

Do you not want a gap between the jobs?

you can just resign on Monday giving advance notice stating that the last working date will be X.

I think I’m owed a couple of days annual leave so that will be enough of a gap between the jobs I think.

I guess so, I know the company can be ruthless when they want to be. Enforced pay cuts, instant sending home to gardening leave when they don’t like someone any more. I guess I need to be more process minded rather than emotive.

no please don’t do this! I did this once as I thought I was being kind giving more notice but they reduced my leaving date to exactly the month! But it was okay as I had accrued holiday anyway!) But I wouldn’t advise it.

freshstartahead · 25/03/2023 12:53

Thanks, don’t want hand in early in case they take that as the effective from date and I leave myself short by a week.

sounds like Friday is the day though!
