To buy DS a laptop for his 8th birthday?

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but...

DS1 is autistic and has ADHD. He gets passing intense interests but his one continuing passion is gaming, especially Minecraft. He doesn't play with toys. He used to love Lego, it is now done under duress. He has never played imaginatively with toys. We have a whole cupboard full of games which we do play together as a family, but we really don't need anymore of these. So I don't really know what to get him toy wise. We're buried in books (which he does read) and he already has a magazine subscription.

So, for his 8th birthday I'm thinking of getting him a laptop. Reasoning is that I can barely use the iPad because of parental controls and he is not getting his mitts on my laptop, but the laptop version of Minecraft is better apparently. Also, I think he'd love coding and I think it would be a useful skill for him to learn so we could buy him the laptop, put Minecraft on it and buy him some coding lessons. I've also been looking into therapy for ASD children via gaming for him and he could access this via the laptop. In addition, his occupational therapist has said that realistically he'll probably need to be typing rather than writing in secondary so to get him started on learning to touch type as it will take him longer - which he could do on the laptop.

But... it just feels weird getting him one so young. Even though we'd only allow him to use it in a room with us.

So, am I mad for considering this? And if not what should we get? With other family contributions we'd have a budget of £300-350 I think.

Not at all mad, if it feels right for you and you know he will like it and make use of it, then go for it. He will need one soon enough for school, and it is a great tool for him.

Sounds like the right thing to do!

Not at all mad - DS1 (nearly 7) loves playing minecraft on my laptop, he makes giant detailed castles usually. My DBro is teaching him how to code.

(Plus he has maths homework on the laptop every week)

I think you should pause and consider.

I have kids with asd who love tech and have really benefitted. However, there are some kids who really struggle to regulate the use and it quickly becomes a battleground and a source of meltdowns and sometimes aggression especially in teen and preteen years.

Do it. My ds is also autistic, he loves his iPad. For his latest birthday we actually got him a gaming pc which he loves. Gaming is his special interest and I hope one day he will make millions out of it 😂

Although I do agree about the regulation side. I have to be strict otherwise he'll be on it constantly

That's good points re the time limits - he complies currently but can be quite grumpy about it so I'd have to do some thinking about time limits and boundaries and make them very clear if we did get one. I had imagined it as coming out for the coding and touch typing lessons and then a few 'treat' hours at the weekend but I can see how that could slide into 'but I just want to do some coding practice, it's educational'...

Sounds like a good idea OP!

We did for ours and he is an amazing typist now.

And he can create spreadsheets, PowerPoint and word docs. He loves it 😂 go for it!

Try looking at chrome books too

Get him a laptop. If you get dla for him (it sounds like you should) you can apply for one from Family fund. Ask the O.T. if they can recommend that he has touch typing lessons at school, my middle child has this in his EHC and it's been brilliant for him.
