Pink eye/conjunctivitis- flight early next week!

Little boy has a pink eye/conjunctivitis and has done for a few days.

No discharge so pretty sure it is viral. Eye is just red. Not sore or itchy. Everything I’ve read states that eye drops won’t help if viral. Is that right? We are just wiping with cooled boiled water.

Will we be allowed to fly? Stressing out slightly!!!

I had the proper funky eye version last week and when I went to the pharmacy for drops, the first thing they asked was whether there was any discharge from the eyes. When I took my glasses off, they gave me the drops straight away! My little girl has had red eyes and no discharge and they seem to have healed alone with no drops

*gunky

DESGUSTING · 24/03/2023 19:17

My child had it 2 month ago and it cleared within 5 days of bathing with cooled boiled water.
I was doing that pretty often.

GP wouldn't prescribe anything as no discharge

We flew British airways earlier this year with a child with conjunctivitis. It didn’t occur to me that we might not be allowed, kids can still go to school with it. I think you will be fine.

Is it puffy as well as red? DS2 has conjunctivitis at the moment and it never went gunky/pussy but we ended up at the eye hospital and he still needed antibiotic ointment. (I also thought it couldn't be bacterial without the gunk)

Yeah, they are a little puffy :( Maybe I should try and take him to a pharmacy tomorrow morning

Wipe with baby shampoo

Oblomov23 · 24/03/2023 19:58

Take him to the chemist tomorrow and get whatever you can get. first thing Monday phone the GP and get a proper conjunctivitis cream that only the GP can prescribe.

Thanks, will do. Hopefully my other DC won't catch it. I have a horrible feeling we will be refused boarding :(

I know this post is old but just wanted to see if you got on the plane? We’re in the same situation!

Awcw1234 · 17/06/2024 10:22

Hello, yes we did! Eye drops did the trick although we did have to keep using them for a few days into our holiday!

This is not medical advice.

DD got conjunctivitis at 4pm on a Sunday so I rang the govt helpline. Nurse talked to a dr who said saline (I don’t have it) or Chamomile tea. I just made it, cooled it and wiped it in every half an hour for a few hours and it worked wonders. Then I wiped regularly for a few more days.
