How do I register a death

My DM died on Wednesday morning. What do I need to do to register her death? Is it as simple as ringing the registry office to book an appointment? What do I need to take with me?

Sorry about your DM. Phone the Registrar who will tell you what you need but below is from gov.uk. (England and Wales)

So sorry 💐the gov.uk site and Scottish govt site (depending on where you are) are your best source of up to date, accurate info here. The uk site has a few questions to answer to direct you to the right info. I’ve found the right links below:

There should be details on the local authority website on what to do. Councils might do things differently. But yes you usually are an appointment and need to take the death certificate and have details of your mum to hand, dob, occupation, maiden name.

but there will be details on the LA website.

You need the form from the doctor or hospital & then make an appointment for the registry office. Use the tell us once service at the registry office so that the DWP, housing benefit, council tax etc are all told by them to save you loads of phone calls. Get a few copies of the death certificate because you will need them for insurance, banks etc.

Thanks everyone. She was in a care home. Does the death certificate get sent straight from the gp to the registrar or should I be picking it up? On the council website it says the registrar will contact me but that the dear should be registered within 5 days of death, including weekends, which will be Sunday but I haven’t heard anything

Unless things have changed recently you'll need to pick it up.

My mother died in a nursing home and her death was certified by the local GP. I had to go round the following day to pick up tue certificate.

Similarly, my father died in hospital, and I had to go in to pick up his certificate.

I don't remember getting any sort of certificate prior to going to the registry office. I don't remember one for Dad and we definitely didn't have one for Mum. That said Mum passed away during Covid so we didn't go to the registry office either - it was all done over the phone.

Yes you phone the registry office and set the ball rolling.
Is your funeral director not helping you with this as the one I used for my late parents was very helpful in guiding me in the right direction.

way2serious · 24/03/2023 06:44

The complication is that my DM died in England and the funeral director is in Wales and so the systems are a bit different. But I will phone the registry office this morning and get their help.
thanks everyone.

Is the care home not helping? You need to get a form signed by a doctor saying she's died and then you book an appointment with the registrar to get the death certificate. They'll give you a Tell Us Once thing which you fill in (either manually or online) which will alert all the various authorities. You might want to get a couple of copies of the death certificate.

It shouldn't matter where the funeral director is but you need to register the death where she died.

I'm sorry for your loss Flowers

Clymene · 24/03/2023 06:51

And don't worry too much about the five day thing - you can't register the death if you don't have the paperwork. It took a week to get ours.

WhenDovesFly · 24/03/2023 06:54

Hi OP, I'm a funeral arranger. In England the hospital, GP or Nursing Home sends a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) to the registrar's office and then the registrar will contact you to make an appointment to attend.

Sorry for your loss 💐

Death certificates cost £11 each.
