Gardening, Hair, Being Polished

Has everyone else's plants in the garden died? Is it because of that cold snap we had? 90% of a Hebe is brown and dead, 50% of a bay tree/Bush, it appears my Clematis Montana has died as its leaf buds are black and dead, will these all regrow?!

When should I plant some young trees/shrubs now? Are we going to have another cold snap?

I dyed my hair too dark, how do I lighten the colour?!

How do I look polished on an almost zero budget?!

Answers from you MN gurus please xx

Clematis benefits from being cut back to 30cm from ground level in early spring, taking all the dead growth off the top.
Bay trees will pretend to be dead until you have shelled out £32 for a replacement, after which they will regrow vigorously from the base. (Bitter experience!)
Mine have survived minus 12C winters up here in Scotland, regrowing when necessary.
I have no experience with Hebes, as any I have bought rapidly commit suicide in my garden, long before winter arrives.
Can’t help with your other queries - my hair has been silver for the last 15 years, and my dress style ranges from casual to bag lady! Grin

Neither hebe nor bay are particularly hardy in the UK climate.

You may need to cut the clematis back, as another pp says.

You can plant out other trees and shrubs now.

Hair - no idea.

Sartorial elegance - I'm the sort of person who wears jeans to the Chelsea Flower Show, so it's no good asking me.

clematis montana is spring flowering.

So if you cut it all bakc now you will get no flowers.

It may or may not flower if caught by the cold snap. But they are generally very tough. It is pretty hard to kill a montanta.
So I would wait. If no flowers by May, cut back, feed and WATER they don't like being too dry. It will regrow, clematis often reappear after a while, don't give up on it yet

trees and woody shrubs are always better when planted dormant.

But most are fine if planted at other times.

I never rush into digging up or replanting after cold snaps. Many plants will go quiet for a while and then send out new shoots

Thanks everyone ☺

My garden is half dead and I look terrible as well if that’s any consolation?

Pinkywoo · 23/03/2023 16:12

Yes, I lost loads of plants

Wait until the end of April

Head and shoulders

No idea!

anythinginapinch · 23/03/2023 16:12

Re your last query, don't go out in your gardening kit

How do I look polished on an almost zero budget?!

Get some very good quality clothes that are showing vague signs of wear from a charity shop.

StillMedusa · 23/03/2023 16:50

Tip of the day...don't let your significant other 'trim' any plants.
Bastard Dh actually managed to kill my huge beautiful passionflower 'pruning' it (ie giving it a military haircut to the base). AND my Penstemon. And I caught him tearing down the ivy on our back fence last weekend. Ivy was all that was holding the fence up!

Leave your plants be, most will recover.

Head and shoulders for the hair or ColourB4 if it's really bad (but you have to re dye or it will oxidise)

I look like a gardening, dog walking bag lady so can't help there Grin

neitherofthem, bay is very hardy in the UK! Mine survived minus 12C here in Scotland, and MIL’s one survives regularly being buried in snowdrifts and exposed to vicious freezing winds on the North York moors!

Strongboat · 23/03/2023 17:53

My plants in tubs seem to be dying this year.
Wash with head and shoulders. If doesn't work, use colourless hair colour remover and re-dye lighter.
No idea how to on any budget, sorry.

TheIsleOfTheLost · 23/03/2023 20:48

Hebe is a bugger for this. It really can't tolerate late cold snaps. Plant your trees now or wait until next year. They will get plenty of water now, but summer dry will not be their friend if they go in then.

Never mind your hair, with all this gardening you will soon have a fashionable reverse French manicure of blackened tips.

FLOWER1982 · 23/03/2023 20:56

Try a clarifying shampoo to strip the colour.

Xarrie · 24/03/2023 11:24

The random questions made me laugh. Try baby shampoo.
