Vaginal bleeding post menopause, What can I do?

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 23/03/2023 11:23

I had my last period about 10 years ago. This week I have had vaginal bleeding, and weird sensations in my pelvic area. I would describe them so much as pain. I have rung my doctors, fully explained why I wanted an appt, and told them I was extra concerned as my Mum had womb cancer. All they can offer me is a phone appointment next Thursday. I would never abuse A&E but if it potentially affects my quickness of investigation and makes a difference if I do have cancer then I would do it. A week is an awful long time to wait to even speak to someone.

It's definitely a bit of a shock when this happens
There is info on nhs website giving advice
Get the telephone consultation with gp who will refer you on for investigation
I was sent for scan everything OK great sense of relief
Please don't waste AE time they really aren't for this
Good luck

Get the phone appointment. They'll want to refer you on for this without a doubt. Post menopausal bleeding is taken seriously.

A week is pretty prompt, though I appreciate it doesn't seem so to you.

Could you afford to get a private consultation?

i don't think a week is good enough. you'll be referred under the 2 week referral system - the phone appointment puts this a week behind. Ring back and ask for an emergency appointment.

underneaththeash · 23/03/2023 12:01

I don't think A&E would be able to get you seen quicker on this occasion.

Thank you. Did they say what yours was due to? I am in a panic, and thinking a week may be the difference between recovery or not, if it is cancer, hence my thoughts about A&E. I have heard about ‘2 week pathway’ where you are referred quickly so something can be done, which is why Iam freaking out about not even speaking to a GP for a week.

It’s bound to be a worry the exact same thing happened to me. My gp referred me on a 2 week wait I had a scan and a camera and all was normal. The consultant said these things sometimes happen. It’s not happened again But I was glad to be checked out for reassurance

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 23/03/2023 12:03

Has anybody experienced this? What was the outcome?

I had similar last year. Contacted my GP via practice electronic consulting system, & was asked to come for an examination the same day. Was given an appointment for a transvaginal ultrasound on 2 week wait referral & was seen within the week. All clear & consultant told me it was not uncommon & usually due to hormone fluctuation or vaginal erosion 😱, but needed urgent investigation to rule out cancer.
Please contact your GP surgery & ask for an emergency appointment to get the ball rolling ASAP.

wobblychairleg · 23/03/2023 12:06

I had this. Saw GP for emergency same day appointment, and I was in gynae clinic having internal examination and ultrasound 10 days later. They really don't hang around with this stuff. (Mine turned out to be uterine polyps, removed successfully, they were benign, and I've been absolutely fine ever since).

glitterisntgendered · 23/03/2023 12:06

I would call back, ask for an an emergency appointment as you think it will need a 2 week pathway referral (it likely will even if it's nothing, my mum had this and it was fine but the first sign of bleeding led to an urgent referral)
If they refuse say you'd like to complain and speak to the practice manager.

MarquessofPembroke · 23/03/2023 12:07

In over 90% of cases the cause is benign. Often vaginally atrophy. Do you use a topical HRT like Vagifem?

Your GP should examine you and if they cannot find a definite cause refer you under the 2ww. Many GPs automatically refer.

MarquessofPembroke · 23/03/2023 12:10

Sorry, that should have said many GPs automatically refer after examination - even if they can see cause of bleeding.

Movinghouseatlast · 23/03/2023 12:10

Once you have had the Gp appointment they will see you for a scan quickly. I had it and wasn't examined by the GP just sent for the scan. In my case they have no idea why I keep on having it.

I would probably phone back and state 'post menopausal bleeding' as the receptionists have certain key words they listen out for I think

Azaleaberry · 23/03/2023 12:29

I had the same thing around 18 months ago. GP saw me urgently and referred me on the 2-week pathway. To cut a long story short, it turned out to be endometrial cancer although it took a while to diagnose it. Now fully dealt with and I’m thankfully still cancer free. But I agree with others who encourage you to push for a more urgent GP appointment.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 23/03/2023 12:29

I have just rung 111 and they asked loads of questions and have said I can have a phone consultation later this afternoon with my GP, so hopefully some investigations can start. I was perhaps being dramatic considering A&E, but the things that go through your head….. I haven’t even been to my GP in 4/5 Yeats, I thought I may be lucky enough to see a Dr, but apparently it’s not a thing nowadays at my surgery….

I got a cancellation appointment with my GP and he referred me on the two week pathway. Within about a week I was referred for a uterine scan and on the way back from that appointment my GP phoned to say he was referring me on due to thickening of the womb lining (the speed and the diagnosis both scared me but actually they are both fairly common). Within about another couple of weeks I had a hysteroscopy where they removed a polyp. This was last June and no more problems since. The bleeding started about a year after I commenced HRT. Try not to worry OP they take this type of bleeding really seriously so you will be in safe hands.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 23/03/2023 16:05

Luckily, the power of 111 has just given me a telephone consultation with my surgery, with a GP who was lovely. She is referring me, and I should hear from them within 2 weeks. I told all my symptoms to the receptionist this morning, and told her that my Mum had history, and she was adamant that I had to wait for a week for a phone consultation. Thank you for all who took the took the time to comment. You gave me the push I needed to call 111.

Pleased to hear the GP dealt with it as they should. Good luck, hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 11/04/2023 17:12

I was given an appointment last week and had internal scan using a probe. They tried to take a biopsy but could not do this easily as apparently I have a 6cm calcified fibroid just over the neck of the womb. No spotting for a few weeks, but some discomfort that I hope is as a result of all the efforts to try and get a biopsy. No results until after the doctors strike, but if the sample is insufficient I will need to have an op so they can examine by camera. Thank you all for your replies.
