Employment medical report

I had a lot of time off over a short period of time with bereavement, stress, a virus with asthma complications and in the end became really ill.

My work have requested a doctor's report which has been sent to me.

I feel a lot of the stuff in it is very personal, embarrassing and irrelevant.

Does anyone know how much I can ask to be amended before giving my consent to share it?

Thanks!

It depends on your job and why they want the report.

They want it because of my recent absences. I work in a call centre. I know I can have it amended but I've never done this before so not sure what I can ask to leave out

Will the report go to an occupational health professional, or your line manager? For me, that would influence how much information I would want my GP to share.

Also - do you need any adjustments to do your role?

My manager, and no I don't need any adjustments. They're having my disciplinary tomorrow but I only received the report this evening so I feel really pressured to get it amended before then. But I just want to be sure about how much information they're receiving.

Why are you having a disciplinary?

Is this part of a capability procedure because you've had a lot of sickness?

They will need to know that your absences were genuine but they don't need a ton of information.

As you're asthmatic, a statement like 'x had a respiratory virus which inflamed her pre existing asthma' should be enough.

No it's a disciplinary because of my absences 😟

We had a very traumatic bereavement in the family, then I became very ill with a virus and a chest infection. I had sick notes etc.

I've been told I will likely receive a warning.

This whole thing has me really stressed and I don't feel like my managers that I work with every day having deeply personal information about me is going to help (information unrelated to those absences)

I'm sorry you've had such a horrid time.

I asked my union about a similar scenario and I was advised that I could give the medical info to HR who would then confirm to management that they had seen it and that it provided adequate proof. Management would never have access to the actual record negating the need to have info redacted. HTH

addictedtotheflats · 22/03/2023 20:54

Never heard of a request like this and I have been managing sickness for years, and HR advisors have never asked me to request this information. Personally I wouldn't be disclosing this report and stating sick notes from the time of absence is sufficient.

I'm very tempted to say no. I had fit notes to back up most of my illnesses and when I had the chest infection although I had to self certify I had photos of my prescriptions.

The report contains information going back years - very personal and painful things - which are irrelevant to my recent absences.

The silly thing is I've been back at work for well over a month... So quite obviously I'm okay now and don't need any special adjustments 🫤

I wouldn't share your personal and private medical information with your manager. They cannot insist - it's within a HR or Occupational Health remit to ask - they cannot demand. Your sickness and absence have adequate evidence. As a manager, I have never asked to see someone's medical record - it's none of my business.

Shoemadlady · 22/03/2023 22:46

Why don't you photocopy it but anonymise the personal bits and only leave in the bits that relate to time off and your absence disciplinary.

I think it has to go through the doctor so I need to ask him to amend it. I wish that was an option though.

I would try to speak to the doctor in the morning and see what they can do, but I wouldn't hold much hope that they will be able to amend it tomorrow, especially if substantive changes are needed.

And maybe give ACAS a call before your meeting.

No, I'm not too fussed that they won't get it tomorrow. I'm just so stressed with this whole thing I've accepted that I will be getting a warning and I'm currently looking for another job. It worries me that I might struggle with a reference even though my performance reviews are great (apart from my attendance)

It's stated on the letter they gave me explaining the Access to Medical Reports Act.

I've never been through this before and it's so unpleasant.

Thank you everyone - the surgery manager redacted the information in time for my meeting - got a written warning 😔 oh well

Sorry to hear that. Am pleased you were able to get some of the info redacted though.

Hoping things move onwards and upwards for you.
