Dick Van Dyke has a car crash at 97yo, he shouldn't even be driving imo.

As great a man as he is, the time to stop was long before now.

Yet younger people cause more deaths
( per mile driven , not just because there are more of them)

That's why their insurance is so high

Agism again

Not all older people are decrepit and incompetent

Per mile driven? Yes - because they drive more miles!

In this part of Canada (Ontario) drivers are tested at age 80 and thereafter every two years. The initial screening is a classroom test plus fine-motor skills test, which might be followed by an actual road test.

Seems quite sensible. Well done Canada!

Do you really think its ageism to suggest driving skills and reaction times decline in the very elderly?

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/03/2023 08:57

Yet another MN ageism thread.

How depressing

Kendodd · 23/03/2023 08:58

I remember being in the queue at the mini supermarket/petrol station a while ago. A very elderly man was being helped around the shop, just by customers, he was on his own. He couldn't stand up to queue and had real difficulties with the card machine, his hand was shaking to do the numbers. The to the shock and horror of the watching queue, he struggled back to his car and drove off.

Not ageist at all to suggest a 97 year old probably shouldn’t be driving. Their cognitive skills and reaction times are simply much slower.

Kendodd · 23/03/2023 09:03

A friend of mine had a terrible time with her dad and dementia. He wouldn't stop driving and because of the dementia couldn't understand why he had to. The final straw came when he drove the wrong way down a duel carriageway and they got rid of the car. He mum had still been using the car but couldn't see another option, plus, she wanted to stop driving before her own skills started to deteriorate.
