Is it definitely eczema? Reason I ask is that psoriasis can cause join pain and psoriasis can look similar to eczema.

goingmadnow · 22/03/2023 11:38

Oh don't get me started 😆 I have another thread about that ! The doctor is telling me it's hand eczema even though she can see the swelling on my hands for herself

She is telling me eczema causes joint pain but everything I read doesn't say anything about it... other than inflammatory arthritis being linked to eczema

What type of eczema have you diagnosed with, how inflamed is it, do you have fissures, have you been able to manage, or reduce exposure to, your triggers, have you been advised to use a short course of topical steroids (& emollient)?

You shouldn't have joint swelling, but inflammation of the skin may be painful if not treated, or if infected.

I've posted links below that my be helpful.

I have hand and wrist eczema and they sometimes look swollen but I don't think it's the actual joint, just the inflamed skin

goingmadnow · 22/03/2023 13:19

Thanks for the replies and the links.

No it is definite joint pain - it started at the end of my pregnancy so I thought it was swelling linked to that, but nearly 6 months later it's still happening. My knuckles don't hurt at all (the skin across them does) but my actually finger joints really hurt, sometimes barely any pain, sometimes really bad. They hurt too touch the joints, I've had warmth too. I just don't know why the gp will not entertain any kind of inflammatory arthritis and is convinced it's eczema. I never knew it could cause joint pain, which is why I want to hear it from people on here. My sister had severe psoriasis too so there is a family link, my nan also had RA.

No idea what my triggers are regarding the eczema. It tends to flare up every couple of weeks, itches, goes very very dry, cracks and bleeds then gets better. Nothing I do seems to change that cycle.
The doctor prescribed e45 cream and then in the follow up phonecall said oh yeah it's not the best stuff 🤔🤔🤔

These are my hands atm. The flare up is nothing compared to what it was a few weeks ago but you can see the swelling on my fingers

Arrange another appointment with your GP to discuss blood tests to include nflammatory markers. If they put up resistance discuss with the practice manager, good luck

There's good advice below about medical moisturisers, a lot are available to buy in various sizes over the counter if you wanted to try before asking the GP to prescribe the 500ml volume. Eczema.org also do a fact sheet on topical steroids

Emollients | Eczema Treatment | Eczema.org

Emollients are medical moisturisers used to treat all types of eczema. A good emollient regime can soothe, moisturise and protect the skin, helping to reduce flare-ups.

*inflammatory markers

mindutopia · 22/03/2023 14:11

I would say generally no, but you could have eczema and a type of inflammatory arthritis. I would assume though that with your family history, you absolutely should be investigated for PA and RA. I had fatigue and joint pain/swelling several years ago and my GP was quite quick to test for RA (in the end, it was a likely combination of low vitamin d and reactive arthritis). I would potentially see if you can book in with a different GP and get some blood tests.
