If you are neurodiverse would you disclose it in a job interview?

Diagnosed adhd and I've been invited for an interview. When would you tell them? Before, during or after? Ill probably need some minor adjustments put in place for me so they'll need to know.

Tell them if and when you get the job

timeforchampagne · 21/03/2023 23:02

If you need adjustments tell them before?

timeforchampagne · 21/03/2023 23:04

Sorry do you need adjustments for the interview of for the role?

if for the interview - before

if not I’d tell them after tbh

there shouldn’t be any judgement of course! But I wouldn’t be convinced depending what adjustments you need x

I would potentially declare at interview, as they can make minor adjustments at interview if required and may actually support your application. I work for a local authority though so they are quite hot on equality and diversity.

Findyourneutralspace · 21/03/2023 23:11

Do they mention equality and diversity in the application process? Often places will say in the application pack or when inviting you for interview and ask if there are any adjustments you need, which is a good sign.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 21/03/2023 23:11

Hmm. Depends on the employer, I think, and how enlightened you think they are likely to be.

I have adhd and do a lot of recruitment. It wouldn't make any difference to me if someone declared that they were neurodiverse at any stage, as long as I felt confident in their ability to do the job.

But a lot of people still misunderstand adhd, so I would hesitate before declaring it myself. Maybe waiting until they make you an offer is the safest option.

Good luck!

Tell them if you get the job

premicrois · 21/03/2023 23:27

I'm autistic so I would have to as I don't interview well and I think it goes a long way to explaining that.

WandaWonder · 21/03/2023 23:41

There would have to be reason to do so not just because

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/03/2023 07:10

My employer has a diversity section on the job application form, and asks if you if you have a disability to declare. They are also belong to the guaranteed interview scheme. ADHD is protected under the Equality Act, via the disability characteristic.

I would tell them, so that they understand you better in the interview, and so any adjustments you might want can be made. (Eg, I recently interviewed someone who had legitimate reasons for needing a bit more time).

I do say this rather idealistically though, and I do work for a very engaged employer.

What does the company you are applying to say about EDI?

Crumpetdisappointment · 22/03/2023 07:11

didnt they ask on the application form?

Crumpetdisappointment · 22/03/2023 07:11

or does it normally ask if adjustments are needed for the interview?
i guess when/if you get the job, you will have occ health
