sales assistant charged me twice for purchase - can i get a refund for the amount without correct receipts owed?

Probably a non-issue but I am feeling a bit anxious about a purchase I made today. I should have been more on it but wasn't.

Extra 15% off offered in a shop today. So, I bought 2 items totalling £43.

As I presented the card to the machine I thought the amount of £43 didn't look right but assumed I had miscalculated the cost. After the assistant gave me the receipt I asked if the extra 15% had come off and she said no, she had forgotten to do that and would sort it now. I waited while she sorted it out but it was taking a long time and she said she would need more time. So, I browsed around the shop as I could see she was flustered and didn't want to add to the pressure.

Quite a few minutes later, she said everything was sorted and I asked if I needed to present my card again for the refund and she said no as the till had all my details on it. I thought that was strange.

I collected my things and was looking at something near the door when she came over and said she did need my card after all. So I went back to the till and presented it again. She then gave me 2 receipts but said to ignore them as they were not right. She also said more than 15% had been refunded but not to worry about it.

I was in a hurry as I had an appointment and had to go but when I got home I checked my banking online and it shows that 2 payments have been deducted. The first one for £43. The second one for £39.55. No refunds have been given. I checked the receipts which she told me to ignore and they don't seem to match up.

My question is : can I get a proper refund back for the amount owed without the relevant receipts? The only way I can prove it is by my online banking.

Bottom line: I should have been more on it and checked everything carefully.

Hope all that makes sense. Thanks for reading.

This happened to me in john lewis once and they could get the camera / cctv recordings to verify

You'd need to know the exact time tho

Sometimes a refund takes 3 days to go back in account. Id give till Fri and go back in.
Some refunds go faster though

Bingpt · 21/03/2023 21:32

How much did you pay, and how much did you get back?

Myneighboursnorlax · 21/03/2023 21:32

It is possible to issue refunds without the card on certain systems (we can at my work). It sounds like instead of refunding 15%, she’s accidentally refunded the whole £43, and then realised and charged you the amount she should have charged to begin with. It may be that the £43 refund shows up in a day or two.

Bingpt · 21/03/2023 21:34

Read it again and understand now! I think you'll get first payment refunded in next few days.

anewbook · 21/03/2023 21:43

@Bingpt I paid £43
and then again what I assumed was a refund (embarrasingly wasn't paying proper attention )

banking shows £43 and then £39.55 have both been deducted.

but the correct amount that should have been charged was £36.55 (15% off £43).

cross post!

OK, yes I see. That could definitely be a possibility - ie the refund will appear a few days later.

I'm also wondering about the £39.55
it should have been £36.55? (ie 15% off £43)

I will just have to wait and see what my online banking shows!

thanks for all the replies

It might have been that only one item was eligible for the discount

Contact them asap

@YerAWizardHarry

I did wonder that, but tried both scenarios (bought 2 items- tried deducting 15% off each) and the figures don't add up.

There was an additional "free gift" of £3.00 which she could have charged me for ... as the difference was £3.00...

If you go into the store they can check the transaction log and will be able to rectify.

anewbook · 21/03/2023 21:58

@rwalker
Yes, I think this is the best bet.

(anyone else hate these types of situations? ah ..that's a whole other thread!)

thanks all

Update
I checked my online banking again this morning to see if there had been any further transactions cleared...only to find that both yesterday's transactions had gone. I know I didn't imagine it yesterday because I screen shot them.

I haven't received any email from the shop and they have my email address as I gave it to them yesterday.

I don't know what to think. So, now there nothing has been deducted from yesterday.
