Peoples views on lower paid jobs

Evening all,

I just wanted to bring up this thread because I have noticed in the last decade or so that people seem to frown upon jobs for example; (Cleaners, Carers, Bus drivers etc) also people without Degrees get frowned upon too. What can't some people accept that a Job is a Job and not having a Degree makes you a failure.

What's your take on this?

ItsSuchACryingShame · 21/03/2023 17:35

I have a degree.
I work in a low paid job. I will be getting a pay raise when NLW comes in in April.

Somebodiesmother · 21/03/2023 17:35

I mean this is mumsnet...

LoraPiano · 21/03/2023 17:37

Well with generative AI, a lot of jobs that people have gone to university to qualify for will be replaced by machines anyway so the above manual jobs will have a lot more degree educated applicants.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/03/2023 17:40

We would be fucked without those sorts of jobs. The older I get the more I appreciate people in "proper" jobs as opposed to higher earning people in "non jobs" which matter not if they disappeared. I don't give a shit how much someone earns if ultimately all they're doing is pleasing the shareholders without actually contributing to society.

I've done a non job myself as a temp job. However it wasn't well paid. I thought it was a waste of tax-payers money and therefore didn't respect the organisation and didn't stay long. It didn't give me a sense of self-worth.

I have a "proper" job now. The pay is terrible and the stress is huge. But I am needed, and it gives me a sense of self-worth because of that.

LucyLeave · 21/03/2023 17:41

My take is that lower paid jobs are just as important and valid as higher paid jobs.

Anyone looking down on them is a bit of a dick and needs to get over themselves.

Londonnight · 21/03/2023 17:45

I agree. I am a cleaner in a hospital. My job is as important as everyone else's. Hospitals couldn't function without cleaners.

KateF · 21/03/2023 17:46

I have a degree and am studying for an MA. I am in an extremely important but low paid job. I'm in early years, I love it and I'm proud of what I do.

YewandOak · 21/03/2023 18:01

I'm a supervisor in a cafe, working with young neurodiverse people.

It's rewarding, satisfying and hard work. But I still get looked down on because it's ''unskilled'' No - I've done a lot of training in kitchen/food hygiene/health and safety, coffee training-there is an ''art'' to making the different coffees you want.

Theyresexpeoplemn · 21/03/2023 18:05

I have a lot of respect for people who work in harder, lower paid jobs. They keep everything going and should be proud of their work.

GarlicGrace · 21/03/2023 18:11

Well, it is Mumsnet 😂 I've just read a thread where people can't possibly be expected to manage on £100k a year, and another where co-parenting while on benefits means you're a scammer. In fact, anyone claiming any benefits at all is a thief unless it's child benefit or free nursery, in which case there should be no restrictions whatsoever. Unless you're in a low-paid job, paradoxically!

Have you also noticed that You Simply Can't Get The Staff these days, which has nothing at all to do with the fact that you see cleaners as thieving pond scum? And SN children: all misbehaviours are caused by possible SN, unless the child is actually diagnosed. Then it's wrong to attribute misbehaviour to SN and the parent should do better parenting.

It's all part of the fun Wink

Laptopneeded · 21/03/2023 18:11

It's weird.
Has anyone ever seen a Sophia lorentz type here doing a bin round?

Because I have in Italy! In Florence an absolutely stunning girl was emptying bins on the truck and same in lake garda.

The point being I wonder if the jobs weren't thought of as the same way here!!

I've seen quite a few threads lately with people making about the free 15 hours of nursery that every child is entitled to even shock horror those who's parents don't work

People seem to think its childcare and not early years education since the government started funding extra hours for working parents

Pubesofsoberness · 21/03/2023 18:22

Moaning not making!

TeenDivided · 21/03/2023 18:23

An honest job is an honest job.

TomatoSandwiches · 21/03/2023 18:35

Our society doesn't appreciate skilled or unskilled necessary workers, the wrong people are over exposed and over paid imo, there is very little balance.

Feuillemille23 · 21/03/2023 19:05

Yep, that attitude snacks of privilege and living in a bubble, and yet it wasn't the overpaid non job twats who kept the world running during the pandemic... I do sometimes wonder how the arrogant pampered twats would do in a post apocalyptic world where money no longer worked and you actually had to barter skills and abilities for food and shelter.... it's one of my favourite daydreams...

MintJulia · 21/03/2023 19:28

I have a degree and a higher-paid job.

As soon as I've paid off the mortgage (14 months), I'm going to resign and take a lower paid job. I can't wait 😊

As long as you are happy, what other people think really doesn't matter.

Thighdentitycrisis · 21/03/2023 19:39

It’s not just the past 10 years OP
There have always been people who look down on others

Louisetopaz21 · 21/03/2023 19:42

I am a professional on a decent salary but nit an high earner but I have a lot of respect for those on lower paid salaries as they are working for their money and hard it much needed roles. I could not do my job without them.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/03/2023 19:43

My take on it is "some people are twats".

I don't care what twats think.

My life is very simple in that regard.

Tarantellah · 21/03/2023 19:44

It has nothing to do with degrees. Graduates work as shop assistants and cleaners and dog washers and all sorts, because there aren’t enough graduate jobs.

GiltEdges · 21/03/2023 19:47

A job is a job 🤷‍♀️ I often look back (no doubt with rose tinted glasses) at the easier/lower paid jobs I did when I was in my early 20s and wish I could go back to them.

Twinedpeaks · 21/03/2023 19:48

LoraPiano · 21/03/2023 17:37

What makes you think that professional jobs will be made redundant but manual jobs won't be replaced by machines?

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 21/03/2023 19:50

Your job/income/housing does not make you better or worse than anyone else. But posting today provocative threads like this??…..

caringcarer · 21/03/2023 19:54

I have respect for all people who work in some capacity irregardless of their job. It's the ones who don't want to work (not can't work through disability) who I have less respect for.
