I CANNOT get the hang of click'n'collect grocery shopping

I first tried it last year. Turned up at my slot time to be told they were running 90 minutes behind schedule and it's best not to set off until the order receipt comes through to my email. Would I like to wait for 90 minutes in a car park or drive home and come back again? And no, they can't cancel it at this point so I can't just go in to the shop and do it myself.

Decided to try again this week.

Put my order in a couple of days ago. Forgot to add biscuits. Tried to amend but apparently I can't add anything once it's finished which seems bloody ludicrous to me. Oh well, I'll nip in and buy biscuits when I collect my order.

Waited for the order receipt to come through. Set off. Got my shopping. Parked. Went into the shop for biscuits, still reasoning that I was saving time and effort by having them do the bulk of it.

Got home and unpacked. They did not have the following items and have not substituted: cheese, lettuce, humus, peaches. So that's packed lunches bollocksed for this week! I'm going to have to go back to the shop. AGAIN. Or to the expensive local shop which was what I was trying to avoid by going to the cheap, far away one in the first place.

This. Plus can get some great reduced items in store. I regularly fill my freezer.

It doesn’t have to be either or. I use click and collect for some types of shopping and freezer-filling bargains at other times. It’s about what’s the best use of my time and money at different points in the month.

Yfory · 21/03/2023 20:23

Of course you cant add something once the order has gone through - why would you imagine you could do that.
As for the missing items........you got a receipt which will have stated which items werent available. Thats a mega clue what wont be in your shopping.

LadyWithLapdog · 21/03/2023 20:23

Never done this. What happens with your frozen stuff? Do they assemble it when you’re about to collect?

owiz · 21/03/2023 20:26

@Yfory most of the supermarkets let you amend your shop up until the night before delivery.

Frozen stuff is held in a freezer then added to the crate when they bring it out

WeCome1 · 21/03/2023 20:38

I presume it’s like with a delivery. There is freezer, refrigerator and ambient storage and they just take out the correct crates from each. It takes two minutes when you go to collect it. If it’s done properly.

Defaultsettings · 21/03/2023 20:43

I’ve never had this problem and I have done weekly click and collect at Tesco for years.

Even if there’s an issue they sort it out then. They subbed a non-dairy ice cream for a dairy ice cream so I refused it, the shop lady went back into store for me and found a dairy free substitute for me.

Dinopawus · 21/03/2023 20:53

I actually prefer click & collect to delivery as I can usually get a slot the day before instead of having to plan further ahead. I also find there are fewer substitutions as you mostly order what is in stock.

Never had to wait more than 10 mins or so and if I have forgotten to order anything, I can pop in the shop for it and still save time on doing a full shop.

Yfory · 21/03/2023 21:05

Owiz Ah yes thats true (and I do that myself) but as I always sort mine out at the last minute I dont get to go back and add stuff as my time is up- so I forgot that yes that is actually an option. Ooops. But it is standard when ordering online that you dont get to go back and add stuff - so it really shouldnt be a surprise.

Gingerkittykat · 22/03/2023 03:39

Asda doesn't tell you about unavailable items, just subs. It really annoys me when I collect and some items are missing without them letting me know.

LadyWithLapdog · 22/03/2023 06:30

Does it actually save you money by not making impulse purchases? And are you super organised in other areas of life as well? I’d love to be.

PinotPony · 22/03/2023 06:35

Never had a problem with Tesco. I book a slot a week in advance and add to it during the week up until midnight the night before.

Turn up in the allotted hour and check the paper receipt they hand me. Give back any substitutions I don't want.

If I'm missing anything important, I nip into the store to buy it. Bizarrely the click and collect is actually picked at a different store so "unavailable" products are usually on the shelves in store.

QuintanaRoo · 22/03/2023 06:39

It’s best to collect it, see what’s missing (tells you on the print out) and then go into the shop to see if they’ve had a delivery since picking your order.

HandScreen · 22/03/2023 06:42

TheOtherBennetSister · 21/03/2023 03:24

I don't think I'll bother again.
I only did it because I'm flat out this week and I thought it might save time. It didn't. Especially when you factor in the time it's taking me to moan about it on Mumsnet!

Why don't you get it delivered to your house? What is the advantage of driving to collect it?

Morph22010 · 22/03/2023 06:45

I’ve done click and collect at Asda last few weeks as I’ve been unwell and not up to walking round the store and it’s been fine. I get an email once it’s picked to say any substitutions or things they are missing and then when I pick up if I don’t want the substitution I can hand it back

MapleSyrupSweet · 22/03/2023 07:02

Why aren't you just getting it delivered?

Tinybrother · 22/03/2023 07:31

sometimes click and collect is more convenient than delivery

Luckydip1 · 22/03/2023 07:47

With delivery your shopping is brought to your house and you put it straight into the fridge and cupboards. With click and collect you have to drive to the store, wait around while they find your order, load it into your car, unload it back home and then put it into the fridge and cupboards. Delivery is so much more convenient. As for missing items you can just nip out to your local convenience store.

WhatHaveIFound · 22/03/2023 07:51

I've used Sainsburys & Morrisons and never had any issues. DD uses Asda and says it's been a great service.

I wonder if you're trying to collect on the same day as ordering? Or collecting from a smaller branch?

Tinybrother · 22/03/2023 07:53

As I said, sometimes click and collect is more convenient

let me go into tedious detail with an example. I am capable of understanding that not everyone has the same circumstances so I know that delivery may always more convenient for others. For me it is not always.

last week was busy. The only day that worked for a food shop I was out all evening and had a full day of meetings from home, starting at 9am. I did not have a free hour’s slot to wait for shopping at home. however, I could do click and collect between 8 and 9am, as the supermarket is on the way home from the nursery run, and have everything put away before my first meeting

Tinybrother · 22/03/2023 07:54

“As for missing items you can just nip out to your local convenience store.”

as you can with click and collect missing items Confused

We do sainsburys and it's a piece of piss

Delivery might be more convenient for you, but it’s not worth the extra cost for me. £7 delivery for Tesco takes the piss tbh. 50p click and collect means £6.50 more food shop and that’s a lot for us. There’s no wasted trips as we go after work on the way home and bringing it in from the car in bags into the kitchen is the same as bringing in the crates from the delivery man. But you’re not under any pressure to unpack quickly, and much more manageable bag sizes to lift and carry too.

Luckydip1 · 22/03/2023 07:58

@RichardHeed I think I pay £4 a month with Sainsbury's for free delivery Monday to Thursday, so not a big expense.

Probably! I write a meal plan / shopping list & stick to it. That applies to delivery too. Honestly, it's horses for courses, but for me the benefits of click & collect are:
You can do the shop the night before.
It's cheaper (free midweek)
Fewer substitutes by ordering closer to picking.
I can combine the trip with other errands or collect on the way home from work.
